Right-Click Calculator in Kinetic

Some of you know that in the Smart Client, there is a feature that if you right-click in any numeric field, you have the option to see a CALCULATOR. Any number that is in the numeric field automatically populates the calculator, where you can do math… when done, if you press OK, the value in the display repopulates your numeric field.

Do you Know about this? Do you Use it? Should it be added back into Kinetic? or is the built in calculator in Windows good enough? (Please answer any /all these questions in the IDEA linked below, AND VOTE if you want it back.

Here is what it looked like in the smart client:

Here is where you vote if you feel this is an important feature to add back into Kinetic:https://epicor-manufacturing.ideas.aha.io/ideas/KNTC-I-2775

Don’t forget spell check

Not sure if it is commonly used, perhaps people just don’t know about it… My users were blown away when I showed them the power of the context menu (Calc and Spell check included), we still using classic at the moment.

I would hope the browsers built in spell checker would work. Otherwise yes, that is an important feature.

Clearly got my Like for Like Hat on…Yikes didn’t even think of that…

It would be NICE to use the spell check from the browser, but in order to have right click available for other things, we had to deactivate the spell check. We are talking about other alternatives.

I haven’t used the classic right click calculator, but many times wish the logic was built in to the UI, like Quickbooks. If you enter a math sign in the number input field, it’ll calculate it for you.

E.g. type ‘23.59 * 4 enter’ into the number field, enters 94.36 automatically.

That’s a lot less work than the current classic (or windows) calculator:

  1. Mouse over and right click on the number input field (annoying to switch over to a mouse when you’re typing with both hands).
  2. Mouse over & left click on calculator in the menu.
  3. Enter the same sequence as you could have typed directly in main UI (23.59 * 4 enter)
  4. Key ‘Enter Tab Enter’ to close the calculator and paste it into the main UI number field.

A lot of our employees have gotten very fast using the keyboard, and adding additional mouse gestures slows down the data entry process. Anything to reduce that (optionally) is appreciated by the power users.

ooooo yeah I love being able to do that in CAD programs as well. Some of them even keep what you wrote, so if you double click on it, it will show 2.75*8.333 or whatever you typed in

You can activate the spell check in the properties of the text box in App Studio still.

I would say it’s nice, but not a necessity. Like you said, most users don’t even know it’s there. The priority on that should be low. (there are a lot more important things to fix)

I would also agree that being able to do math right in the numeric fields would be much more helpful than a popup calculator.

I knew of it and showed a few users but I have no idea how often, or if, they use it. I have not had a need myself as-far-as-I-remember. I concur with others that doing match in the number field would be a better method.

yes.. and it does SHOW the spelling errors, but the right-click doesn’t allow corrections.

Ohhh, gotcha.

@timshuwy or @hmwillett Is there a way to enable spellcheck globally without a custom layer?

I think so but in a different implementation. Either in field calculations like I type “4 + 4” and it fills 8 or as a small icon in the right of the field that looks like a calculator so people can easily learn the feature. Generally there is no reason to right click on a numeric field so I think it often times just became an unnoticed feature.

I would like to see it included in Kinetic, but maybe more visible.
Many nice features in Epicor were missed by many because they were buried in a context menu.
I would think something like a calculator could be more visible as an icon in the field control that can be clicked (kinda like date fields), along with an option to enable certain fields to auto open the calculator on focus.
I’ve seen this done in some other software and in some cases it was super helpful.

Just saw @jgiese.wci post, which I obviously agree with.

I’ve also seen software where you just enter the math and when you hit ‘enter’ it enters the result.
Heck, OneNote does this too in freeform… which is really nice and I found that feature by accident because I was typing the calc… say 83 * 2, and as soon as it hit ‘=’ it put 166 after it… so nice.
