RoHS Poll/Question

We have taken the new part number approach, largely because its
"in-your-face" and is clearly defined. We were concerned with
situations where the suppliers stated that their stock is now RoHS
complaint, but we aren't sure of the age and status of our current
stock.

Fortunately we are theoretically exempt as the controllers we build are
part of LSIT's but our customers are likely to know better, so we have
to make an effort!!.

Best Regards,

Paul Whittle

Ron,

Fortunately, due to our line of work, we're exempt from having to go
the lead free route. The way we are currently managing RoHS parts is
by putting a '#' in front of the description field. We also add a
little message saying it complies on another line in the description.
When (if) we move to Vantage 8, it would be nice to have a user
defined field to tick for RoHS compliance. I've tried adding one and
its really easy in Vantage 8/803.

How is everyone handling RoHS compliance in Vantage?
New part number?
Purchasing notes?
Customizations?
My Director of Operations wants a checkbox added to the Part
Maintenance form to indicate if the part is compliant. Given everyone's
experience, does this seem the best way to go? We're on 803.305e/SQL

Thanks,

We aren't 'live' yet on 803 but do have RoHS issues to contend with when we are in few months. I've been envisioning something like the check box idea.

However, you might want go a little deeper and make it selectable controlled value field. If you are like us, most parts will be non-applicable to RoHS so you really need three selection options - not just a true/false checkbox.

The selectable values for the user defined field then would be one of three (make up your own meaningful abbreviations):

1. non-applicable to RoHS
2. non-compliant to RoHS
3. compliant to RoHS

If you use multiple vendors for purchased items that must be RoHS, you should probably add something similar to the vendor-item maintenance screens (and perhaps add some vb code so setting a vendor-item to non-compliant forces you to unapprove the vendor for that item).

For all parts (purchased or made), you probably will want to hook review of this user defined field into your EC workflow as part of an overall revision control/maintenance process.
