Running MRP with Users in the System

We try to run MRP when the least number of users are on the system, for
us that typically means its just MES users, but occasionally do have a
few power users on at times. This hasn't caused us any trouble to date.
If MRP failed we can usually trace it to a bad MOM or something like
that.

Subject: [Vantage] Running MRP with Users in the System

While running MRP today, the MRP process stopped, and was "abandoned" by
the
system. We contacted Epicor Support, and they said that users should be
off
the system when you run MRP.

As we are a 24hr/day shop, this is impractical for us. What is your
experience? Do you throw all the users off the system to run MRP? Can
anybody continue to work? What failures have you seen when people are on
the system when MRP runs?

Thank you so much for your help.

They will tell you that as a standard reply but you are right it is not always practical. However, there are a lot of depends on here such as
Â
How many parts/orders/jobs you are processing at any one time
How many processes are you running with MRP?
Are you always running a full regen or a net change
Are you running finite?
Are you running multi-pegging
Whats your server processor and memory?

We've run it occasionally online with no issues. Perhaps MRP hit a resource limit that you can increase in Progress Explorer Tool. Check your log files while MRP was trying to run.

Here are the answers to your questions:

How many parts/orders/jobs you are processing at any one time.

There are about 1200 open jobs; about 100 new ones created during this run.

How many processes are you running with MRP?

1
Are you always running a full regen or a net change

For now, Regen. In the future, I want to run NetChg during lunchtime.
Are you running finite?

Yes
Are you running multi-pegging

No
Whats your server processor and memory?

8 processors; 8GB memory; Intel; Windows

I hope this helps zero in on the problem. We are on 8.03.407 with Progress.
Any ideas?

Most of the time I have experienced this is when there are certain competing processes that use a lot of memory at the same time MRP is running, causing the process to hang. Typically these are things that are run during the day such as GL reports, large queries, etc. so I would not expect MRP to compete against these if you are running at night, when perhaps there are only shop floor employees and some supervisors on the system
Â
I would watch your server performance monitor when it is running MRP and see what your page file usage looks like, number of processes that are running, and what your biggest memory hits are (system backups may be competing as well as some other processes that perhaps you don't even know are running). Always make sure your other database app servers are not running unless needed for testing (Train, Pilot, Test) and make sure your APP servers are set correctly so you are not pre-allocating more sessions than are needed and taking away the memory that is needed to run processes such as MRP. Â
