Running Vantage 5.1 from remote site

I've never seen any improvement either, but thought that in your situation "maybe" it would do something. Oh well.

Hey Troy,
yes, I have it installed on my PC at home. All the library files
(Progress & Vantage) reside on my PC. I just point the database to the
vantage
server. I had a direct DSL connection from work to my house (about 15 miles
away),
and I could achieve around 3 second response times. Now that I have Verizon
as my
ISP, I am not seeing those speeds.
We have done a little terminal server research, and that is the way
we are
headed. We have quite a few DSL users (sadistic $%&#'s) who want to work
from home.
As always, thanks for your response.
BTW, I've never seen any improvement in that schema cache technique. I've
tried it
with every release since 3.0.

thanks,

I tried running Vantage through a DSL connection through a VPN this past
weekend and it was painfully slow. (1 minute to log into vantage,
45 seconds to query a part in part tracker).
Does anyone have any words of wisdom as to what kind of setup would be
required for acceptable performance?
thanks,
Try http://www.tridiavnc.com <http://www.tridiavnc.com/> . We like it
better than pcAnywhere, and its free! It would work really well over a DSL
connection.

Robert,
you have a host to connect to. I'm talking about logging on to the
domain,
through the internet and starting a client from the connected PC.
I have the libraries installed on the remote site, but it takes forever to
do anything.
I am thinking I need either terminal server or citrix.
thanks for your response.
TridiaVNC is excellent if this is for a single user. However, it
can't support more than one connection at a time. To do that, you
should look into running Microsoft Terminal Server (or Citrix). I
have a remote site that has up to three stations which sign on
concurrently via DSL/VPN. Works great!

A. Try installing the Vantage client programs on the remote PC.

B. If you are only supporting one remote user, then Tridia, RAdmin,
or pcAnywhere.

C. If you have more than one remote user, use Citrix.

Troy,

To connect remotely all we do is startup the TridiaVNC Viewer from the
remote location, and fill in the dialog box with the IP address of the host
computer that you wish to take over. If the host computer is running
dynamic ip, then we use a utility supplied by http://www.dynamip.com/. This
will pickup the ip address of the host if you are running the utility at the
host.

Dick,
Do you actually have Vantage installed on the remote machine? If so, can you do the "Create Schema Cache File" from System Management / Utilites? It is supposed to help to increase speed of connecting to Vantage.

Unfortunately the host machine is running outside of the firewall. The VNC
server does have password protection, and there is a time limit associated
with its availability.

Hey Troy,
yes, I have it installed on my PC at home.
I've
tried it
with every release since 3.0.

thanks,
