Gary,
Vista is a little limited with it comes to Serial Numbers, but there are a couple of ways to work around it.
1. Don't enter the customer's serial number in the Serial Number field. Try using Lot Tracking, and use the customer's serial number as a Vista Lot Number. Vista is somewhat looser with Lot Numbers, and even if it doesn't let you re-use a lot number, you can just add a "-1", "-2", "-3" if you need to.
2. When the part comes back for it's second trip through your plant, create an RMA in the system. That's the only way we've found to have Vista allow re-use of a serial number... but that will probably do bad things to your costing.
There are probably other ways too, but these are things we've done.

I will do several operations for the same part shipping them back and forth to my customer. When I enter the job for the first operation I assign the S/N's given to me. we complete that job and ship it back to the customer. my customer ships it back to me for more work we enter it in as a new job number since we are doing different work on that part. my customers purchase order carries the same part number as the original purchase order and they use the exact same serial numbers since they are the same parts that have been machined by us previously. Vista will not allow me to use the S/N's again even though I am trying to assign them to another job but the same part number
