Scheduling Engineering Operations

You could always not add those ops until they are needed on the job…..once the others are finished.

I think we are close to coming up with a solution will let the group know

We have the same scenario and the same limitation as you have.  We have never found an acceptable workaround.  It would be really great if there was something similar to the "related operation" on the subassembly which could indicate that it can't start until AFTER the opr specified is complete.

We are trying to constrain our job sub-assembly operations from being started until our four engineering operations are completed (drafting, checking, engineer review, MOM review). We have those four operations up underneath the parent assembly. But in scheduling the lower level assemblies it doesn't look at the dependency on those operations and are getting scheduled ahead of our engineering operations if the capacity if available through finite scheduling

We are trying to use either an engineering part, non-stock, marked as constrained, that gets built on a make to job demand link. We schedule the engineering job to build the "engineering" material, and then when it is received into the parent job allow those operations to schedule forward

Any other suggestions on setting up assemblies and operations within a job so those operations don't schedule to start until the other 4 operations are completed?
Maybe I don’t understand your example, but I assume you’re calling out a related operation from the sub’s to the parent.. have you looked at tying them to the last of those engineering ops and then forward scheduling? I’m trying to visualize the indented structure your describing..

So basically one structure/job assembly. Tied to the top level assembly are the following operations:

Op1 - Draft
Op2 - Check
Op3 - Review
Op4 - Set up MOM

Then 8 assemblies, each with their own materials and operations. I want to schedule so that the first operation of the 8 assemblies do not start until the Set up MOM operation has been completed

The only way we got this to work was to have a separate engineering job and not release the production job.  We had engineering as a part number for the engineering job and then as a material number on the production job, then linked the two jobs.

Subject: [Vantage] Scheduling Engineering Operations

Ok, so have you set the subassembly so that it’s tied to Op4 – Set up MOM (related Operation 4) and then used a forward scheduling technique?

So basically one structure/job assembly. Tied to the top level assembly are the following operations:

Op1 - Draft
Op2 - Check
Op3 - Review
Op4 - Set up MOM

Then 8 assemblies, each with their own materials and operations. I want to schedule so that the first operation of the 8 assemblies do not start until the Set up MOM operation has been completed

Maybe I don’t understand your example, but I assume you’re calling out a related operation from the sub’s to the parent.. have you looked at tying them to the last of those engineering ops and then forward scheduling? I’m trying to visualize the indented structure your describing..

Thanks Manasa, I tried that as well but it would not schedule the production job after the completion of the material

The only way we got this to work was to have a separate engineering job and not release the production job.  We had engineering as a part number for the engineering job and then as a material number on the production job, then linked the two jobs.

Subject: [Vantage] Scheduling Engineering Operations

Yes exactly. Not getting it to line up though

Subject: [Vantage] Scheduling Engineering Operations

We don’t currently have engineering ops on any of our jobs but I have been thinking about the best way to tie it all together and get them onto our jobs. I was thinking of not doing it as a separate operation and just having different statuses in the system for the job to become available for our production dashboard. What are your thoughts on this? Is that too simple?

We have the same scenario and the same limitation as you have. We have never found an acceptable workaround. It would be really great if there was something similar to the "related operation" on the subassembly which could indicate that it can't start until AFTER the opr specified is complete.

I think we are close to coming up with a solution will let the group know
