we are attempting to use job scheduling and have run into a problem. The operation time to complete the operation is 200 hrs. This does not fit in the overall time frame for the job. Correct the problem, we indicate that two machines (people) will be used for the operation. we expected to see the schedule reflect this by cutting the elapsed operation time by half. we saw no affect?

Is our logic wrong or ????
Thanks

Did you change crew size or # of machines?. Changing the number of machines
from 1 to 2 should cut your hours in half. Changing crew size will not.

We have just switched from a two shift system toonly one
shift .
This has halfed the hours and therefore doubled the no.
of days required to produce a job.
I will need to reschedule all open jobs in order to get
the correct job start date and Material required date.
Is there a way to reschedule all jobs together or will I
need to deal with each one individually?

Jill,

You can global finite schedule, but if you are not using finite
scheduling, you can make more of a mess using finite scheduling. I
would bite the bullet and do it one job at a time.

Actually, global finite scheduling should work great. This option will
actually globally infinite schedule everything. It will only finite
schedule workcenters that are designated "finite". Try it on your test

It should work great, but when we eliminated our partial second shift
our president tried global finite scheduling one Sunday afternoon after
our Epicor consultant told us not to do it. It was a disaster. We
realized that the lead times, queue times, move times we entered in Job
Entry were not conducive to finite scheduling. Since we were not using
finite scheduling we never used the job priority levels since they don't
work unless you are finite scheduling. We did not understand how
certain work centers and operations settings would affect the outcome.
We should have planned and scheduled longer single shift days and some
Saturday overtime on our shop calendar to allow us meet our delivery
commitments until we better understood the total impact of our decision
to eliminate the second shift. We were advised by our consultant and
the former lead Epicor scheduling instructor that a company should
probably not go to finite scheduling during their first two years on the
system. We ended up rescheduling each job and have since been fine
tuning the system so that some day when we go to finite scheduling we
shouldn't have the problems based upon need dates and priorities,
leaving

I agree with Greg that doing it on a test or backup database should be
done first. If you decide to go ahead, do the scheduling on a Thursday
evening so that you can analyze the impact on Friday and be prepared to
work the weekend to work the bugs out before the shop comes back in on
Monday.

I have a big job with with multiple quantities. How do I set the
relationship between 2 successive operations with start-to-start
relationship such that 1 can start 8 hrs after the other. I am
reluctant to use move time because it can be different for different
jobs, and because on some jobs which have finish-to-finsih
relationship there is no move time at all. So i really donot want to
go to workcenter maintenance everytime and keep changing my move
time. Also I am not sure how the system will react when i move a job
using visual scheduling and perform load leveling.Does it calculate
based on what the current setting for the workcente is.

Any suggestions.

--- ## Post #10 by @system
Mike,

Vantage schedules jobs on top of each other on work centers with two or more machines. Try adding a 2nd machine to that work center. You may have to 'fool' Vantage somewhat, but it should work. Just make sure your route times are good. Meaning, if your scheduler can keep track of the start and finish time of each job it can be done. Vantage allows you to schedule jobs simultaneously, if you desire. It just makes more work for your planner/ scheduler.

Hello Gary,
Here are a few things that are not explained clearly.

1) If all Work Centers are infinite and all jobs are Normal priority
(backward schedule) and you run the global scheduler it will not schedule
into the past. It appears to backward schedule all jobs that do not need to
go into the past, it then forward schedules any jobs that would go into the
past. These forward scheduled jobs are then highlighted as late. This is a
good thing! This differs from scheduling a Job from job entry where any job
scheduled backwards will go into the past if it needs to.

2)We have had cases where a Job marked complete still showed up on the
schedule. Closing it removed it from the schedule.

3)On the Job Management Configuration screen "Global Reschedule Started
Operations" indicates whether operations that have been started should be
rescheduled by the global finite scheduling function. This check box also
does a lot more. We had entire jobs that would not reschedule with global
finite scheduling and this checked yes made the problem go away. This had
something to do with the last operation on the job. We also had problems
with the schedule hanging when we ran global finite and with short duration
operations being scheduled longer than required, sometimes ten fold. These
problems also went away when we checked this box.

4)There is no way to finite schedule a single job. Unless you lock all
other jobs and then run the global finite schedule. When you schedule a
single job Vantage treats it like the the only job you have making all
resources available.(infinite scheduled)

5)If your job travelers are document controlled you might want to remove the
date fields. Each time you run the global finite it will reschedule all
jobs unless you have them locked, this will change the date information that
appears on the travelers.

6)Make sure only one person is doing the scheduling!

These are the things that I can remember.

I'm not sure exactly how you want to use and setup vantage but some of the
choices are:

To make every piece of equipment a workcenter or use machines and work
centers or both.
Create Jobs from the part file or directly from quotes or both.
What operation rates are you going to use fixed hours, pieces per hour,
etc....
What are the work center settings such as number of machines, Hrs per day,
machines per operation, move and queue times?

Example:
In a training database, Before your class try to create a part in the part
file, add some operations, keep it simple such as using 8 setup hours and 8
fixed run hours per operation. Set the work centers for 1 machine, 8 hours,
and 1 machine per operation. Create a job then copy the part routing to it.
Back schedule and look at the results in job tracker and on the schedule
board for each work center. Next add in MOVE and QUEUE times on the work
centers of 16 hours and 32 hours. Back schedule and review again. Change the
crew size for production or setup then do the process again. This is the
basic mechanics for scheduling, from this base calculation you will simply
add more calculations such and changing from fixed hours to pieces per hour,
scrap, etc...

From there you will look at rearranging the schedule with finite scheduling,
load leveling, what if scheduling or advanced scheduling. Also the fields
for costing for jobs and quotes but save that for the costing class.

If you grasp the basic calculations for forward and backward scheduling you
should be well ahead of the curve for your class.

Yes and Yes, anything in particular your concerned about? We went live on it

E are finally beginning to use the BOMs, routings and the scheduling in
vantage. So far so good except we are finding it cumbersome to have to
re-schedule each job after every change is made. We run our shop by
backwards scheduling. We also run engineering and manufacturing
simultaneously in order to expedite work so our BOM's and routing are
constantly changing. Our leadtime times are on average 8-12 weeks.

My boss asked me if it is possible to have all jobs automatically backwards
schedule themselves each night so he doesn't have to do each one after ever
change he makes. I know there is the global reschedule, but it seems like
it a company wide forward schedule, so I'm wondering if anyone knows of a
tool to re-backwards schedule all jobs...
--- ## Post #24 by @system
Actually the default direction depends on your scheduling priorities, most
of the defaults are backward, except for the highest priority which is
immediate and forward.

There is not a standard method in 6.1 or before for doing a global
reschedule automatically, though you could do it with a scripting tool. You
want to be careful with the frequency of global finite scheduling, doing it
daily might lead to instability in your schedule, especially if you are
using finite capacities, priorities are critical then.

Be aware that Vantage backward scheduling will happily schedule into the
past without any reality check. It is all well and good to do so, except I
haven't figured out how to go back in time to finish the work when it is
scheduled. We have had to implement a technique which switches jobs from
backward to forward once incomplete ops are scheduled in the past to create
a more realistic workable schedule.

Lastly, you need to realize that by default Vantage will not reschedule ops
which have already started. If your shop ever does informal splits on the
same job to finish some parts "early", your schedule for that job becomes
effectively frozen.

Before I left last night I ran the global reschedule and left. Well, I cam
back this morning 12 hours later and it was still running (or maybe frozen)
I couldn't tell, so I ended it through promon since nobody could access any
schedules. Now, if I try to go into a specific job and backward schedule it
it seems to get locked up and at a small percent complete. One job used to
take about 20 to 30 seconds, and the same job today has been running for 1/2
hour and is still at 9%. Has anybody else ever had this problem or have any
ideas?
--- ## Post #27 by @system
I figured out what caused my problem - but it leads me to a new question...
basically, we got rid of a machine. Since there was no way to delete or
inactive a machine, I just removed all capacity hours from the machine.
Apparently, the system didn't like that b/c whenever the schedule got to
that work center is when it froze. So, I put 1 hour on that machine, and
the schedules run again. So, my question is, how do others handle it when
they get rid of a machine?

Is anyone using dispatch lists for scheduling?

No, I use a crystal report I wrote that lists the jobs in the order I scheduled them to run.

I use a third party software generated Dispatch list that has more detail than the Vantage Dispatch report.

We have owned but not used the Scheduling module within Vantage 6.1.
One thing I can't figure out is how to get operations to overlap. We
routinely have jobs that our over 100,000 pieces and last 2 - 4 weeks
and we will have pieces packed and ready to ship the last operation and
still be working on pieces in the first operation. Is it possible to
use Vantage Scheduling with this type of production?

Thanks,

Use the scheduling function in the operations

Start-Start

Finish-Start

Finish-Finish

You then offset them using move and queue times.

There's no way to do this! This has been a major issue for us and I
have a change request in regarding this. Currently you can set an
operation start-to-start or finish-to-finish which will overlap them,
but it does not allow an offset to be used. The only way to get them to
offset is by using the queue and move times in the operation master,
which is useless because it is once time that will apply whenever that
operation is used and it is never the same (or even close) from job to
job. If this is something you need, please add your name to my
enhancement request for this capability! Reference Page 22701MPS

Rich,

We use it all the time.

Under Job Entry / Job Operation look at "Scheduling: Start-Start,
Finish-Start, Finish-Finish" . Read the help, "Finish-Start" and
"Finish-Finish" settings will allow you to over lap. If the second
operation takes longer than the first and you start it as soon as one
piece is available use "Start-Start". If the second operation does not
take as long as the first operation so you don't want it to finish
sooner than the first operation because that's not physically possible
use "Finish-Finish".

Patrick Winter

I see, and yes I agree, there is no way to fine tune overlapping to that
degree, you get an all or none kind of setting unless you try to change
some other variable.

Sounds to me like the jobs should be broken down into more manageable
lot sizes.

I would break them down into smaller lots to make the jobs more
manageable. Yes you will have more jobs to work, but you will have
better visibility and scheduling control.

* Is there a constraint in the system at all that you can key
on?

* What would one day's production be? +

* How many pieces of raw materials are required?

* can the item be leaned down?

* How much job splitting do you do?

IF you wanted to track the job from start to finish and be confident in
looking at your job tracker when you say it will be done here or it's
over here being worked on, what would be a good run size?

If you have work coming in/out of both ends of the same job, the job is
too big.

Subject: [Vantage] Scheduling

We have owned but not used the Scheduling module within Vantage 6.1.
One thing I can't figure out is how to get operations to overlap. We
routinely have jobs that our over 100,000 pieces and last 2 - 4 weeks
and we will have pieces packed and ready to ship the last operation and
still be working on pieces in the first operation. Is it possible to
use Vantage Scheduling with this type of production?

Something is scratching around in the back of my mind about Advanced
Planning and Scheduling (APS). I have to go check it out.

For example, Op#20 can start when op#10 is half-way done (or some other
hours or percent...)

What do you mean by an "offset"?

For a messy solution in v6.1 use a dummy operation. This will have to
be manually adjusted per batch depending on the variable being used.
Should only be used for scheduling and execution.

It is a messy solution.
