[Semi-OT] Vantage & Foreign Operations (like China)

The Multi-Site module will allow you to consolidate financials from
another Vantage database or even a foreign database. You just have to
create the account maps.

Thanks to everyone for the great info.

For those running via TS/Citrix the thought occurs to me that server
maintenance time windows stateside must be fairly limited - like to only
on Saturday (assuming 5 day schedule there), right? Has this posed any
particular problems. I can imagine even minor things like applying
patches is tricky since you effectively become (at the least) a 24X6
operation.

This is all speculative and investigative at this point so I'm not sure
where an operation would be so unless there are decent lines it might
make running TS a moot issue anyway. But these are really good IT
considerations for me to raise in the decision making process, because
the people making the decision would never think of them..

Aside from Vantage anyone running any other standalone low-end system
(like maybe 3-4 PCs and a server)? I'm thinking in terms of running an
operation like a completely seperate company then us treating them like
a vendor. The operation would be very small anyway (10-20 people max).
Is there anyway in Vantage to consolidate just the financials by
importing some journal entries?

Thanks again,
-Todd C.

1. We are currently running Vantage 6.1 from Shanghai, China over 2003
TS. The database is located here in the states.
2. As the others mentioned your biggest challenge is going to be the
Internet connection. We currently have two DSL lines to our facility
one specifically for all traffic going back to the US and the other for
local traffic. We use a VPN Tunnel between the two plants.
3. Minimal IT support in China with the availability of outside
contractors if needed.
4. All employees are Chinese locals and use the simplified Chinese
version of vantage. (Unicode Database) According to feedback the
translations are good.
5. I currently take two trips per year to China for all around IT
support.
6. Consultants in China are good. We have used them on a few occasions
and the training seems to be more effective than when US employees
train.
7. We use local US employees as well as consultants for training.

Since the speed is somewhat of an issue we have been looking into
hosting a local server in China to run vantage and then remote to this
box for our needs. So far Epicor has informed me that we would have to
license the products and pay maintenance on this since it is on a
separate box. It is a nice benefit having our US server host the
Vantage application...they can use the entire program while we sleep at
no additional cost.

In the five years I've used Vantage this group has taken on a much more global spread. I have a few quesitons about integrating foreign operations with a U.S. based Vantage platform and I suspect there are some experts (aka survivors) out there. Any thoughts on one or all of the these would be much appreciated and possible valuable for others in the group. I am mostly focusing on China related issues but anything that cross applies would be helpful.

1. Running Vantage remotely....seperate DB or TS type link to HQ? If seperate then how to consolidate info?

2. Telecom issues...like IP-VPN or even availability of Internet access.

3. IT support....from HQ or hire local contractors?

4. Localization (language) issues in a mixed environment (like US-exPats and Chinese locals).

5. Even with local day-today support what is overall impact on HQ IT management? Both in initial setup and later on-going?

6. Epicor support/consultants in China....any good?

7. Training local employees....on own or with outside help (Epicor or consultant)?

Anything else noteworthy in establishing a foreign branch operation?

Thanks,

Todd,

We have an operation in China. We are on 6.10 right now, but in the
process of moving to 8.0. Right now we have about 15 vantage users in
China and 5 here in Tx. Due to the internet speed, our DB is based in
China. Tx users RDP to the vantage server. We tried having China RDP to
Tx, but the speed was unusable. Some days it is pretty slow, but most
are fine.
We do have a VPN set up with a couple of linux servers. We are
working on mirroring folders on each server so that information is local
at both locations. I am the IT person in Tx, and for most things in
China. We do have an outsourced IT person in China for smaller issues.
There is Epicor training in Shanghai, and you can have them come out and
train employees at the office. We also send a person from Tx to China
about every 2 months for training as well.
There are other ways around having to RDP to use vantage but they
cost around $8,000 a month. Fill free to email me if you have any other
questions.

My two Yuan worth...

1. We're running Vantage remotely using Citrix and Terminal
Services. We already had a successful Vantage implementation in our
Singapore plant so just created a new company under this database.
Also, this allowed us to leverage existing I.T. resources in Singapore
that are familiar with Vantage from a database management perspective.
2. Internet Access, make that reliable internet access, will be
your number one problem related to running Vantage remotely. Unlike the
U.S., you can't Google "ISP Provider in China" and get a large list.
If you're located in or near Hong Kong or Shanghai you may luck out and
get a reliable connection. Also, the Chinese government filters all
Internet traffic so this will introduce some latency. You may want to
investigate some direct data circuits. We did not go this route due to
the expense but this may improve your reliability.
3. For local hardware issues we have an engineer who handles simple
emergencies and a local contractor to handle more serious problems.
4. Most system users can at least read/write (though, the
proficiency is fairly poor) English but we are in the process of
converting our Singapore database to a Unicode database to allow it to
support Chinese characters. As soon as this is complete we're planning
to purchase the Simplified Chinese language for Vantage. As a side
note, if you have a new install going Unicode should be no problem.
However, if you're converting an existing database to Unicode be
prepared to spend lots of time. I've been working with support for 3
weeks now with no success. Also, ask very specifically for the internal
document on how to convert to a Unicode database. The eportal document
they may initially send you (or that you can search for) is incomplete.
I've estimated that I've wasted at least 3 man days due to that one
simple fact. The title of the document you will need is "Unicode DB
Deployment61.doc"
5. Due to the language barrier, most of the primary issues go
through our Singapore office. HQ IT (me) may be called in to
troubleshoot issues but most of those are business system related.
6. Not sure about this one since we've basically self implemented.
I will say that the Asia Vantage support coming out of Kuala Lumpur is
much better than the support that used to come out of the Singapore
support office (now closed).
7. We do a lot of training using Citrix (the shadowing function) as
well as some onsite training by the Singapore IT Manager. Be aware that
the EpicWeb Online training can be frustrating to use in Asia due to
(I'm assuming) the latency in the Internet connections from the U.S. I
had been pushing this training method until I actually used it while in
Asia. The choppiness due to latency issues (again, I'm assuming this
was the case since it works great for users in North America) was so
irritating that I was only able to make it through a couple of minutes
before ending the session. Hopefully in the future as there are more
Vantage users on the other side of the globe they will set up regional
sites to make this a more effective tool for training end users.

Hope this helps. Setting up a site in Asia can be challenging but can
also be fun!

Mike
