Server Hard drives for Epicor 9.05

Good DayNick:

APM - Advanced Print Module - best if on 32-bit. There waa
talk of a fix in 601A, but may be buggy.

Some people say Web-Portal, but most say it is OK on 64-bit.

What modules still require 32 bit? Has to be the application server?

Good Day:

Sun Is on M2K 7.0 SP 5 (Informix) but,
Going to: Epicor 9, 9.05.601A SQL (go live date is 12/1/10)

Below is what we used. 55-65 users - we think it will handle 75-80.
there were some minor changes.
Servers were Dell with two Nehalem Quad processors - faster then four
Quad of other type.
Even with all that, system is slow, but the problem is not the core
speed, but the Interface to the Workstation and the 'configuration' of
pages. MRP = 6 or 12 hours depending on if run with 3 MRP-Processes,
45-60 seconds for programs to open ( the first time each day), etc.

I wanted SSD's, but 18 months ago they did cost $50,000, but now I would
believe $4,000 to 8,000.
BUT, SSD's are only really fast I one direction ( read?) - the speed
differential is no where near the same for write.
To test, play with a USB ( same technology) - write much slower then
read. By the way, there are USB's that are 30% faster then most.

Spindles, Spindles, spindles - that is all we heard from everyone and
yes it is not for storage but for speed since each spindle can be
processing at once.

Watch out for 32 vs 64 bit - some modules still must be 32.
Also, watch out for OS - can limit how much memory you can USE ( no fit,
but use).

Thanks for making my point but where do you get your more money
equivalency? One of the fastest SSD's available is from Crucial and a
128 GB drive is $469. In your proposed 4 drive array the cost would be
$1876. Then there are the savings from reduced chassis, power supply,
thermal management, etc. In practical application you can build a 1U
server with a handful of SSD's for under $4000 that will absolutely blow
the doors off of a $15,000 mega chassis multi spindle monster.

My "hardware requirements" documents specifies that the server should have 16 SIXTEEN drives??
This seems a little goofy to me.
Is this correct? We have between 50 - 60 full users.
thanks
There are only two scenario where this recommendation isn't pure lunacy. First, your database would have to be absolutely enormous - on the order of hundreds of gigabytes to require that much physical storage. Second would be attempting to improve application performance by striping the I/O across multiple spindles and/or controllers. If you are really the former then you are talking way beyond the average PC/server market and would need to be looking at enterprise class hardware from IBM/SUN/HP/Fujitsu, etc because sixteen drives worth of throughput will absolutely overwhelm a typical PC/Server backplane. If it is for performance, then a handful of strategically arrayed SSD's will blow the flotilla of magnetic drives away.

Either way, your goofy appraisal seems spot on....

I would respectfully disagree with Michael, the reason for 16 drives is not
about storage its all about performance. RAID 10 with 16 drives would give
you the best performance for you database unless u want to spend more money
and get SSD's which would provide a huge performance boost.

Here is an example

16 SCSI Drive Raid 10: 1200-1600 IO/S
4 SSD Drives Raid 10: 50,000+ IO/S

There is your performance ;-)

The 'limitations' of SSD write speed are mostly nullified by the nature of a
database workload. Although traditional drives can keep up (and occasionally
surpass) SSD in sequential write performance, databases loads are almost
exclusively composed of random read/write requests. Because of this, the
massive advantage in seek time causes the SSDs to provide far better
'real-world' performance. Also, the difference in read/write on modern SSDs
in nowhere near as dramatic as what you see in a common USB thumb drive. The
reasons are a bit beyond me, but I believe it has a lot to do with caching,
write leveling and more sophisticated firmware.

This is quickly becoming a moot point though, as the newer SSD are quickly
approaching (if they haven't already) the same sequential write performance
you see in high-end SCSI drives.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the 'core' modules require 32-bit.
The documentation mentions an administrative console that requires 32-bit,
but I'm not sure what it is. I know both the 'Epicor Admin Console' and the
'Open Edge Explorer' function fine in 64-bit environments.

Perhaps some of the 3rd party software?

Progress Explorer doesn't work in 64 Bit...or Vista/2008 and higher I
believe.

To the best of my knowledge, none of the 'core' modules require 32-bit.
The documentation mentions an administrative console that requires
32-bit, but I'm not sure what it is. I know both the 'Epicor Admin
Console' and the 'Open Edge Explorer' function fine in 64-bit
environments.

Perhaps some of the 3rd party software?

(1) To access the Files Section of our Yahoo!Group for Report Builder
and Crystal Reports and other 'goodies', please goto:
