Yes, I've been waiting for corporate IT to add our new server to the
domain, but it hasn't happened. I need to get moving before the old server
goes off line forever so it looks like I'll be adding 50 users manually...

If you're using "Workgroup" and not a domain, make sure you've added a
local-user to the new server for each desktop user, and the usernames
and passwords you set up on the server must match, exactly, the ones on
the desktops. If you have 5 users, this is no big deal. If you have 50
users, you should really consider moving to a domain-based
configuration...
The "Append DNS Suffix" option shouldn't have any affect on your
problem.

There is no domain at this time. Our old server and all workstations
(and
the new server) are all members of the WORKGROUP workgroup, which is why
I
was thinking there might be some default setting not allowing
workstations
to map to shares. Of course, you all might be onto something that I'm
not
understanding yet.
I checked the TCP/IP settings on the new and old servers. The only thing
different between the two, other than the static IP was that the old one
was set to "append DNS suffix". I changed the other to match.

If the server is not a member server in the domain, has a static IP
address
and does not have the proper DNS(or sometimes WINS) entries then it
won't be
able to find your domain controller in order to be registered, and have
all
proper permissions propagated then you can run into problems like this.
