Server Issue Blank Title 74428

Yes, I've been waiting for corporate IT to add our new server to the
domain, but it hasn't happened. I need to get moving before the old server
goes off line forever so it looks like I'll be adding 50 users manually...
*sigh*

If you're using "Workgroup" and not a domain, make sure you've added a
local-user to the new server for each desktop user, and the usernames
and passwords you set up on the server must match, exactly, the ones on
the desktops. If you have 5 users, this is no big deal. If you have 50
users, you should really consider moving to a domain-based
configuration...

The "Append DNS Suffix" option shouldn't have any affect on your
problem.

There is no domain at this time. Our old server and all workstations
(and
the new server) are all members of the WORKGROUP workgroup, which is why
I
was thinking there might be some default setting not allowing
workstations
to map to shares. Of course, you all might be onto something that I'm
not
understanding yet.

I checked the TCP/IP settings on the new and old servers. The only thing
different between the two, other than the static IP was that the old one
was set to "append DNS suffix". I changed the other to match.

If the server is not a member server in the domain, has a static IP
address
and does not have the proper DNS(or sometimes WINS) entries then it
won't be
able to find your domain controller in order to be registered, and have
all
proper permissions propagated then you can run into problems like this.

Drop into a DOS prompt and check network access to the server with 'ping
Server IP address'

Also at DOS prompt: ipconfig /all on both server and workstation to
check PC IP addr., DNS server's IP addr, Gateway IP addr and subnet
mask.

Turn off Simple file Sharing: start Windows Explorer, Tools, Folder
Options, unckeck "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)"

No problem.
Â
Start -->Control Panel --> System Properties.
Â
Goto Computer Name
Make sure you have your Domain Name in, "To rename this computer or join a domain, Click change," Change Button. Add Domain name.. Example: Yahoo.com
Â
Now you will assign a Static IP.
Start --> Network Connections --> Local Area Connection (You may have more then one connection here. Make sure you have the CAT Cable plugged into the proper Connection Port. It should say 1 or 2 on the bacjk of the server.)
Â
Right Click Local Area Network.
Â
Select Properties.
Â
In the Scoll Box scroll down to the bottom and select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
Here you will enter your Static IP Address, Subnet Mask ie: 255.255.255.0, and default gateway.
You will enter your Prefered DNS address, the server that carries the DNS, or Primary DOmain Controller. This is usually the Exchange Server. You may also have a Back up Domain Controller. You would enter that DNS Address in Alternate DNS Server space.
Â
Hitr Advanced to enter your WINS and verify the DNS addresses are correct.
Â
Optional: You can also assign a pointer record in your Primary DNS server to the new server. If you need further help, let me know.

another machine. This is probably very easy, but I haven't set up a new
server in years. I can't access the share, EPIC51, or any share, from a
workstation. "Network path could not be found." I'm sure it's just a
network access setting of some kind. Anyone know right off the top of
their heads?

Thanks in advance.

I just looked there. It was already off, but the firewall was set to block
file sharing connections. I checked the box to allow file/printer sharing.
I then successfully mapped the V: drive to the new server from my
workstation.

Thank you, everybody, for your help! :o)
