Server RAM Upgrade

Vantage is a 32bit application, however there are many appserver
processes running on the server, each one can address up to 4Gb of ram
which would allow it to take advantage of the additional memory. Also,
even if Vantage didn't use the additional memory the OS will use it,
allowing Vantage to have access to the full 4Gb, and will use additional
memory as disk cache.

I want to upgrade our 32-bit (Sp2) Windows Standard Server's RAM from 4
Gig to 12 Gig. What do I have to do and how will it affect Vantage?
Dell is telling me that I have to go to 64-Bit. I want to get
Enterprise Edition. But Dell is also telling me that when I do the
install of Enterprise it will wipe out Vantage and any other program
installed on the server. Has anyone had any experience with this?

32bit - Windows 2003 Server Standard will only support 4GB of RAM.
32bit - Windows 2003 Server Enterprise will support up to 64GB of RAM

Go 64bit and you can stay with the Standard Edition with up to 32GB of RAM.
Go 64bit and you can get the Enterprise Edition which will give you up to
1TB of RAM

Standard Edition will get you 1-4 CPU, Enterprise will allow you up to 8CPU,
and that is physical CPU, not total through dual or quad cores.

64 bit is a little bit faster from my experience, no metrics for you but it
does seem peppier than 32, even while running a 32 bit app and comparing it
to a clean install on the same computer as the 32bit was installed on with
the exact same hardware.

I think 64 puts you in a better position for the future.

Yes, you will need to wipe the server completely in order to do the install,
either of the 64bit or of enterprise over the standard. There is no upgrade
path I am aware of, and even if there was an upgrade path, I have never
found them to be reliable, I think any OS should always be a completely
clean installation.

Some info with my own 2 cents thrown in.

Pretty much everything they said is true. You need 64 bit server to take advantage of anything above 4 gb ram. There is no upgrade path from the 32 bit to 64 bit, so basically you have to start from scratch. Vantage is only a 32 bit program, so unless you have other applications running on the server, going to 64 bit and increasing the RAM won't help much. Also be aware that not all 32 bit programs will run on 64 bit Windows, so you have to check the compatibility of every piece of 32 bit software you want to run on 64 bit Windows. We run Vantage on a 64 bit server, but we started out that way.

According to M$ you can do an in place upgrade from std to enterprise (and I have done it on a test server). Make sure the install media is up to the same service pack level as the server. You will need the /pae switch in the boot.ini file as well.

Try it in a test environment first

Just a thought, would adding another processor be an option?
