Subject: [Vantage] Server survey - Epicor 9.05, Replication, EPM, Test (physical vs VM)

Is anyone running Epicor 9.05 (progress db) on a VM server?
I'm trying to get an idea if Epicor is truly supporting Epicor 9.xx on VM environment.

Also, is anyone using the replication server, EPM (Enterprise Portal Management) server, on a VM environment? If so, are you using the same server to host both the replication server and the EPM server?

Finally, is anyone using VM for their test/training Epicor 9.xx box?

I'm trying to gauge if it is still better to setup these servers (especially the Epicor 9.xx box) on a physical server (vs VM).

I appreciate any feedback.

thanks.
Gerry

Hi Gerry,

We are currently Live on Vantage 8.03.409C (progress) and we have an E9 test environment on a virtual machine. I have it setup so that I keep a snapshot of E9.04 in which I bring in a copy of our V8.03 database and run the needed schema changes and database conversions. I make a backup copy of the E9.04 database and save it off somewhere else and then I revert to my snapshot of E9.05, bring in my E9.04 database, and run the schema changes and conversions to bring it up to E9.05.

I'm not sure if Epicor is "officially" supporting Epicor9 in a virtual environment or not but whenever I've had any problems with E9 they would perform a WebEx session with me and, even tho they knew they were working in a VM, they never said that they couldn't help me nor have they blamed anything (so far) on E9 being installed in a virtual environment.

We currently do not have any plans to setup our live environment on a virtual machine. We'll probably discuss this more when we get closer to actually upgrading to E9. It's a definite possibility because we have had so much success with our test environment. And 90% of our other servers are virtual. We haven't had any performance issues with our VM test environment but then again we've never had very many people logged into it at one time.

We do have EPM and replication server installed together on one virtual machine. I'm still in the beginning stages of initializing some of our tables but it seems to be working fine so far. I haven't touched EPM yet.

I personally would recommend setting up your E9 test environment on a virtual machine. It is so nice to have ability to keep snapshots of both E9.04 and E9.05 on one machine so that I can run the schema changes and conversions without having to setup two separate servers. And it's nice if you want to take a snapshot of a clean install with a new database and then do some major testing on the database and then quickly clean up all of your testing by reverting back to your clean install snapshot. I think it's definitely the way to go.
