Setting up ODBC for 8.03 & Progress OE 10.1b

For the reasons that Charles mentioned above, I DO find it useful to create a
different ODBC user for access. You can control which tables that user sees;
you can create views without kicking everyone off of the system; and you can
ENSURE READ-ONLY access.

The .400 kit shows how to pass SQL statements to Progress through a .txt file
interface. It's not as nice as SQL Explorer but it gets the job done.

I've looked and looked, but can't find a decent set of instructions
for configuring the server and the clients for ODBC connections.
I've looked all over Epicor's site, and the docs on Progress' are
not specific enough.

On the Server:
1. What (if anything) do I have to do to the ODBCDataServer group,
using the Progress Explorer Tool?

2. Must I create an ODBC connection locally (on the server using
the "AdminTools\Data Sources(ODBC)")?

3. I've added the 'sysprogress' userid, username, and password,
using the "OE 10.1B Data Administration" program on the server.

On the Client:
1. I've installed the Progress Shared Networking tool, and "fixed"
the registry entries per Epicor's app note.

2. When configuring the ODBC connection, the Test Connection always
fails.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Call tech support, they have a kit that has all info needed....don't ask
why they don't have it available on the website!

The best place to go is ftpmpls.epicor.com. Login using your EpicWeb username
and password. Browse to Vantage/ODBC and download the ODBC_Kit_403.ZIP

Epicweb Answerbook 7439 MPS is for version 8.0.

I think it still applies to 8.03 except for the 10.1 driver and the port
numbers are in the 83XX range.

If you are running Crystal on the client then ODBC must be set up on the
client.

If the above does not help, what is the error that you are getting?

Use FTP to get there!!! It's not a web site.

It sounds to me like you have an issue with Vantage 8.03.40? not
creating an ODBC group when it installs. I don't believe the ODBC kit
is going to help you much on that. I have the kit but I have not
looked at it in quite sometime. I believe the earlier versions of
Vantage created the group for you.

Follow these instructions:

Open Progress Explorer and navigate to
localhost/Databases/MfgSys803/Configurations/defaultConfiguration.

Right click defaultConfiguration and select new.
Name the group ODBCGroup
Check the option button for SQL only.
Port Number 8350
Number of Servers 20
Maximum clients per server 4
Minimum clients per server 1
Leave the dynamic ports at 5000 and 3000.
Click Ok.

Stop all the appservers.
Stop and restart the database.
Start the appservers.

You should be set to go if you have your ODBC connection on the clients
set up properly. Unless you have changed the password for the
sysprogress user then it will still be sysprogress. That user has full
update rights to all database tables. If you are concerned about SOX
compliance then that will probably creat some problems.

I found the ODBC kit to pretty much useless with OpenEdge 10.1b. It is
really designed to allow you to create additional ODBC users for
OpenEdge. It requires the use of the SQLExplorer tool which is not
included in 10.1b. I have not found a substitute SQL tool that I can
use to perform the same functions that I could with OpenEdge 10.0b.

Hope this is the right answer to your question.
