Setup Overwrites Vantage.vtg

Here's an idea.

open vantage.ini, fix it, and create a file called safevantageinifile.ini.

make a file in notepad with the following lines

REM deleting last backup
del v:\vantage.in_

REM backing up vantage ini file
ren v:\vantage.ini vantage.in_

REM copying correct vantage ini file to vantage.ini
copy v:\safevantageinifile.ini vantage.ini

REM substitute v: with the name of your mapped vantage drive letter

name it inifix.bat, stick it in the vantage directory, put a shortcut on
your desktop if you wish.
run it after client setup is run.

secure safevantageinifile.ini , inifix.bat , and vantageclientsetup with NT
permissions.

Best Regards,
Thaddeus

We have the same problem in 3.0. Not only does it overwrite during a client
setup, but also at random times throughout the day. We have custom
programming as well and it can be weeks since I've done a client install but
still have to go to the server and replace the vantage.ini file often
because custom programming doeesn't work.

Hi all. Hope the other Canadian Vantage listers had a good Thanksgiving. Got
this question from one of our other divisions. I have been working around
the problem, but I haven't looked for a solution lately.

Every time I do a client setup of 4.0, it overwrites the Vantage.vtg file on
the server. Is there a way to prevent this? Its a pain because our
vantage.vtg is customized to use Mike Podlin's timeout program (and of
course, the users don't tell me if the timeout program stops working).

This happens whether "save as default" is checked during client setup or not
(which makes me wonder what that option actually does). I already tried
setting the vantage.vtg file to read-only, both in the file properties and
the access rights. I couldn't find anything about it on the Epicor site. In
the meantime, I have just been making a copy of our timeout.vtg file and
renaming it to vantage.vtg, but I'm hoping there is a better way.

I see this too on 4.0. I eventually restricted the ClientSetup to Admin
access only (me) and deal with it manually as you do.

Brian, the extra long weekend is always great. Hope Thanksgiving and
Columbus Day (to our American friends) was good as well.
In answer to your question, before every Client setup just create a copy of
the vantage.vtg file under a new name. Then after the client setup just
save the newly named file as vantage.vtg again. This worked for me.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Its just as I thought. Oh well. Have to
keep working around it, I guess.

Could someone post a link to where Epicor has this issue documented? I
couldn't find anything. I would expect that clearing the "save settings as
default" option in the client setup would prevent this from happening.
Therein lies the bug.

Thanks
Brian
What we do in these two cases:
1. Vantage.vtg: We have a copy of the Vantage.vtg file, with a different name. Users access this Vantage2.vtg file instead of Vantage.vtg so that there is no problem when the Vantage.vtg file changes each time. So Mike's utility works even after a client install.
2. Vantage.ini: We (at Vantage's recommendation) set the security to READ ONLY (not the properties, but NT Security). This way we don't lose our propath for custom programming. The downside of this solution is that when running report builder, we get a message saying Vantage.ini is read only, and thus it always comes up with the same .prl file each time. Not a big deal to us.

It looks like it's going to take a lot of requests to get this issue

In the 5.1 version of vantage they have removed the "Cost" button from the
part maintenance screen in the part master file. I know for us this is a
major inconvenience. An enhancement suggestion has been raised. #6122MPS. If
you would like to see the cost button returned to the part master as it is
in version 5.0 and lower please add your name to this number.

Per development "the cost button was removed by design and with sale's and
support's knowledge and approval". Why do they never ask the users?????????

We do something similar with the vtg files except I also have a second .ini

Is there a way to have report builder look at an alternative vantage.ini file so that the RB settings are preserved when launching Report Builder?

We do something similar with the vtg files except I also have a second .ini
for the regular users which is read-only and my own which is RW for me as
the admin.

What we do in these two cases:
1. Vantage.vtg: We have a copy of the Vantage.vtg file, with a different
name. Users access this Vantage2.vtg file instead of Vantage.vtg so that
there is no problem when the Vantage.vtg file changes each time. So Mike's
utility works even after a client install.
2. Vantage.ini: We (at Vantage's recommendation) set the security to READ
ONLY (not the properties, but NT Security). This way we don't lose our
propath for custom programming. The downside of this solution is that when
running report builder, we get a message saying Vantage.ini is read only,
and thus it always comes up with the same .prl file each time. Not a big
deal to us.

Brian,
we have the same problem. Everytime we install a client,
We must modify the .vtg file. We also have to modify the
Propath statement in the vantage.ini file because we have some
Custom programming. Epicor states that there is no way around
This.

Create a shortcut directly to ProRB32.Exe

For the "start in" or working directory, specify a directory where the user
will have write access. An additional benefit is that every time you use
"open library" in RB, the dialogue box will start in that directory,
instead of always going back to Temp or VntgWork. I keep two different RB
shortcuts on my desk top -- one starts in a local directory on my PC, the
other in the production reports directory on the server.

You might try changing the vantage.ini file to read only. You then
need to make a copy for the Report Builder icon, because Report Builder
needs the .ini file to be read-write.

I don't understand why Epicor didn't include the custom path in the
vantage.ini file.... ?!?

A variant of Troy Funte's solution is to put the .vtg files and the
Vantage.ini in another directory like "Epic50\vtg".

I have not had a chance to test this 100% yet, but I wrote a program last
night that will watch and monitor the Startup line in the VTG file and the
PROPATH in the ini file and correct the settings to what you want it to be.
I tried it on my workstation this morning by editing the lines with a text
editor and then saving the files, within seconds they were set back to what
they should be. If anyone is interested in trying this, you can pull the
file off my home server at:
