Sharepoint Blank Title 64219

SharePoint's great, if you want to get up to speed on it then just
create a Virtual Machine in VMware Server and download a 180 day
trial of Windows Server 2003 and then 'Windows SharePoint Services
3.0' (WSS 3.0).

There are two flavours of SharePoint, WSS 3.0 and SPS 2007. Have a
look on-line about them, the chances are that you won't need the
extra features in SPS 2007 which is a product that you have to pay
for, WSS 3.0 is free !.

Be aware though that WSS 3.0 is free software but it's not
realy 'free' if you want to actively use it. It needs to run on a
Windows Server so that costs, you need to backup the data which is
another cost, and if you intend to populate it with huge amounts of
data you'll need a fast server and probably choose to use SQL 2005
for it's database rather than the free DB engine it comes with.

As an example of what can be done the Epicor 'EPICweb' support site
is using SharePoint.

If you want to be realy flash, and with a bit of programming, you can
even get Vantage to communicate with SharePoint !. I know of another
Vantage user, who when a new customer is added a new site in
SharePoint is automaticaly created. How cool is that !.

I'd like your opinions / experiences with sharepoint as a community
tool. Version 2003 or 2007.

I used Sharepoint 2003 in my previous job. What I really liked about
it was the ability to self-manage your information and the sharing
groups. The ease of setting up the site and adding users was great!
It was really helpful for sharing large files instead of
creating\mapping common or shared network directories with an IT
department's help. It was great for tracking changes and versions of
documents. It also provided a good tool for sharing information with
remote offices.

The only risk I ran into was to make sure that any files on the
sharepoint site were part of the network backup process as it wasn't
being used corporate wide at that time.
