We are wondering about what everyone uses for software for shipping labels.
Is there software out there that can be used with Vantage, or is there some
other third party software that can do this? Each of our customers would
like a different format of barcode. Certain things on one line, length of
the bar code etc. Any feedback on this will be greatly appreciated

You can do this with the Crystal Reports shipping label in
Vantage. Set up certain fields to print based on the
customer ID or any other field. It'll take some effort
to set up but will work pretty good.

We use Easylabel software. It works pretty good! We don't have it
interfaced with Vantage or anything. And, we just found out that GM is
going to require 2-D labels and our software is already capable of doing it!
We just need a different scanner.

We use Report Builder.
We reviewed the requirements of all the customers demanding bar
coded labels. Then generated our own label which was comprised
of all the client's needs.

We do this exact thing at Camcraft - works very well. We make liberal use of
"if" statements to give us conditional printing for different customers.

How are people creating bar coded shipping labels? We would like to print
bar coded labels with part#, po# and quantity to put on poly bags which
would contain the parts and then pack the bags in a box. Trying to eliminate
the keying in by warehouse personnel but still be able to make quick changes
for quantity. Usually a 1,000 to a roll but this time we have 1,100 or
shipping 2,500 with two rolls of 1,000 and one roll of 500. Any ideas?
Perhaps a VB form or a subreport? Any input would be beneficial. We do have
Label Matrix and Bar Tender printing software in house already. We are
running Vantage/eManufacturing 3.00.632 Progress 8.3. Thanks in advance for
the help.

Jim,
We are using a product from a company called Loftware. I've used it
for creating shipping labels that draw data from Vantage via ODBC. I've
also used it to create bar coded key sequences for logging in and out of
Vantage.

Label Matrix, Custom Progress App, Custom Visual Basic App and a Zebra
printer.
1) The shipping dept. executes the Progress program from within Vantage
(added menu item).
2) The progress program list all current open packing slips. Shipping
person selects the packing slip no that he needs labels for and clicks the
print button.
3) All required data is extracted from Vantage and placed on the hard disk
in a text file.
4) The program then launches the Visual Basic program which reads the text
file and creates a DBF file.
5) The Visual Basic program then executes the Label Matrix print routine
using the newly created DBF file and the label format selected from the
Vantage Customer VB form field, and the labels are printed off the zebra
printer.

Jim,
I've created a progress program that runs from an icon that allows
shipping department to enter job and heat number, user presses print,
and a report builder report is called which prints the box label.
Any customer info, part info, order info, etc. from any table in
Vantage that can be related from jobhead can currently be placed on
the report. The program can be modified to allow quantities for each
label or prompt the user for whatever.
This is currently printed on a full sheet with peel-off adhesive back.
Bar code 39 could be used if this is what your situation requires.
I've done the same for a custom shipping pick list and labels for the
receiving warehouse.
Feel free to contact me off list if you would like a screen snapshot.

Is anybody using a Crystal Report to print Shipping Labels on a
DataMax label printer? To me, it doesn't look like the form included
w/ Vantage can be customized to print on an actual label printer.
Has anybody found a way to do it?

We use Crystal to print Shipping lables to a Zebra ZM4 printers, I wound up
creating my own crystal format, eventually we'll be printing AIAG barcodes
for packaging I anticipate that it will be done with a compiled Crystal
Report. (Does anyone know if version 5.2 has a multi report selection
feature similar in nature to the Ceasar utility)

Rather than use crystal label templates, try setting up the report to be a
standard report. You can then select your label printer, and paper/label
size just as you would if you were printing to any other printer. The
report design area will resize to match the label size.

We are doing this (unfortunately) with RB reports. It was extremely easy to setup to print to a Zebra label printer as if it is a laser printer. No special coding required. Bar codes are Code 39 and the few requests for Code 128 have been successfuly granted a waiver on that. Most scanners can scan almost any code.
The various label formats are all on a report sub-menu in the Shipping menu branch. Some are driven by SO #, Line and Rel but a few are based on Packling Slip. Main problem with PS is we often box stuff up long before the PS has been generated. A couple customers require a special label on the PS in addition to box labels. As long as we were doing the labeling we now label everything and if there is not a custom label we have a generic version.
The label reports take advantage of passing parameters such as box count from the filters. Most parts have a std qty per carton on the part master but if the filter value is <> 0 it overrides the standard (in case a partial box fills out the release).
Someday I will have to convert this all to Crystal but until then it works great. New requests are often similar to an existing flavor so I can clone it off and make a new one pretty quickly.

Subject: [Vantage] Shipping Labels
I was wondering how other companies are using Vantage to produce "custom"
shipping labels for customers. We have more and more customers that want
their shipments bar coded with all kinds of information. Most of the
customers that have asked for this have a low volume of shipments and we
just made a form in Excel that the shipping guy had to re-key information
into then print the label. Currently I have someone we ship to three to
four times a week asking for a complicated bar code label. I'd like to pull
the information from Vantage and have the labels print when the shipment is
packaged. Does anyone have any ideas? My programmer says he can modify the
program and add a crystal report to the end of the print routine to spit out
the label, but I hate making program changes.
Thanks

Hello All,
Has anyone run into the following issue with printing shipping labels on a Zebra label printer:
Blank extra label always printed after each populated label?
We are running 6.1 and using a Zebra 105S label printer with 4x6.5 inch labels. Problem started immediately after our upgrade to 6.1 from 5.0.
Pulling up the rpt in Crystal seems to show that the report was created and layed out for a 8.5x11 page. But everytime I change the printer configuration to the Zebra or play with the orientation no data will preview.
Looking forward to your suggestions.

One thing you need to specify the actual printer in print set up. Printers
have a library of sheet sizes they can use. If the specific printer name
its going to print on is not specified crystal will default to the default
printer of the computer that Crystal is running on. Also are there any sub
reports as part of the label. I completely ditched the stock label for my
own.

Hi Charles,
Zebra printers and their drivers are fussy.
Check under printers, the zebra printer in question under print
preferences.
I believe there is a default setting that must match the label size.
Also make sure the application is using the right label size.
Hope this helps,

Thanks for the words of wisdom everyone.
Found that I needed to rebuild the label from scratch with the printer
preset to the Zebra - the original from Epicor was laid out for 8.5x11 and
for some reason, just openning the report and changing the printer setup and
saving it didn't do the trick.
Thanks again,
Charles

If you are out there today...I was wondering how you get your Shipping
Label
to print more than one copy?
I can only get it to print one label. I know that I can write a copies
string,
but I want the shipping department to put a number in somewhere and then
that
many labels would print out. I am not sure how to do this or where to
put the
info so that they have minimal input. Is there a way to put something in
the
filter?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

We use the regular Report Builder number of copies field that pops up when they get the prompts for change filters or print preview. At first we had trouble with our Zebra Z4M printer not obeying this only for RB (while in Excel, Word etc... it did copies OK) so we ended up, after finding the right Zebra support tech., lying about the rev level for the printer in the printer setup. There was some sort of flukey quirk in the driver that wanted to see some other rev level for the printer before it would obey all copies commands.
Are you using a Z4M? I can send the rev level that made it start working.
As for in the filter I am not sure if that is possible with RB, or even Crystal. I pass data via the filters all the time but I am unaware of functions or comands that work on the actual printing at runtime. It is no more "input" to do copies in the filter/preview window than in the actual filters area.

Thanks for responding. I am trying to print the label to a laser printer
right now to see if shipping can work with the labels. We are going to
purchase a Zebra Printer next month (August). I have looked at the one
you are talking about and it looks good. I would really appreciate the
rev level when we get the printer. I am going to try what you said.
Thanks again for all your help.

Does anyone know how you can make crystal reports 8.5 or Vantage6.1
to control the amount of shipping labels being printed.
this is my scenario
one part label with Qty: 10
I would like to have with the same report have copies of 10 which
displays Qty: 1.
-->Qty10
Qty1
Qty1
Qty1
Qty1

So if i have an item which was known to have more that 1, the report
prints that many labels plus the total amount. Can anyone suggest
steps to take in Crystal Reports 8.5 or Vantage 6.1 to resolve this
issue??
Any help would be gladly appreciated

You would have to write a programmatic wrapper in any of the languages which
support the crviewer control (VB, C++, Java, .NET). From there, there are
two ways to proceed. First, you can extract the data in the wrapper code
into a temporary data store, replicate the records to the quantity count and
issue the print command in the Crystal API with the report using the
temporary data as the data source. Second, you could have Crystal extract
the data directly and build the windows printer dialog construct in the
wrapper code and pass the quantity variable to the windows API at runtime.

Maybe I am not reading the problem description properly, but we
print mulitple labels for the same packing slip line by altering the
packages quantity in the packing slip line.
This can be done through mass shipments or individual line.
The number of packages equals the number of labels printed.

Are companies using the Vantage Shipping Labels option at time of
shipment? If so, what label printer are you using? Have you modified
the print out and if so, what changes have you incorporated onto the
label?
Thanks,

We are printing to a Zebra 105SL. I have heavily modifed...make that
wrote from scratch a report that contains multiple subreports so that
each customer will have their own required bar code labels printed. Now
that I've got the report dialed in it works great!

Mike,
I see the Zera 105SL can be purchased as a wireless. Are you using a
wireless connection or hardwired connection?
Thanks,
Brian
