I am curious how others handle shipping lead times from job due date.
Job is due on the 15th, sales sees this and enters the 15th as the Ship By date. For our business we can’t or don’t operate that way, our shipping team needs time to build a load. The order is not enough to fill a truck so we have to pair it with something, this takes time to review the region it’s shipping to, other loads going that way, do they have room/available weight on that shipment etc etc.
How/where would you go about adding time for this ‘load building’? My opinion currently is that shipping shouldn’t be looking at future supply and planning loads around that, we have lots of other orders/inventory that we can ship and they should do that. Once product is produced and hits inventory, it gets allocated to open orders, once an order is allocated shipping should see it and then start load building.
We have begun to add ‘Receive Time’ to all mfg products, this sets the job due date an extra 3 days out to ‘trick’ sales into thinking it won’t be ready till that date. Really it will come out of production and into inventory a few days earlier and now shipping has time to load build. I don’t think this is necessarily the correct way to do things, seems like a workaround but the only other lead time field i see is for purchased parts and for transferring lead time.
