Hi,

We currently require a new shopfloor PC.

Currently we use some old Dells which work fine. We dont have any more old ones
and putting a new singing and dancing machine out on the factory seems an
overkill.

Does Epicor client run on Linux?

Has anyone had any experience using low budget small form factor (low ish spec)
machines for MES terminals?

Thanks.

The Epicor client does not run directly on Linux, but you can fake it.
We have a handful of Linux clients on the floor, connecting to a Windows
terminal server that can run Vantage (ver 6.1). The system
automatically boots into the remote desktop client with a profile that
does an automatic login and program start on the server, and displays
the Vantage window only (a customized, limited use MES). But the
majority of our machines (office & most MES) are Windows.

We buy off-lease Dell systems from Systime for around $250 for the
computer itself. If you're in a Citrix environment a
minimally-configured system is fine. If you're running the client
locally, you'll want 2GB RAM.

Check out the L300 Series from NComputing. We use them for our Data collectors (MES) in a machine shop environment. I have the host pc in the server room and then 4 l230's (L300 wasn't out when I did this project), and haven't had an issue with them in over 2 years. http://www.ncomputing.com/products-lseries

David, is the L300 susceptible to overheating from dirt/dust clogs that a regular PC would be in the same type environment?

No moving parts on it so dust and dirt aren't an issue there. They claim that heat isn't an issue and I haven't had any problems with L230 in our shop and I have 9 of them running 24/7
