Looking to transferring data to new company what is best and easiest to use Solution workbench or DMT migration
Hi Alistair,
Solution Workbench is used to import or export customisations, dashboards, functions, reports etc. (i.e. developments and changes to Epicor), not data.
DMT is for mass adding/updating data.
Thanks Tom
For a company to company transfer of data in the same environment, should I use the standard DMT Export/Import or the migration folder?
I’ve never personally used the migration section of DMT, but I believe that is used when upgrading to a new version or Epicor, maybe someone else could confirm that.
For just simple data transfer, use the management section. Company & Plant are key columns in all tables, so you will be adding rows (and deleting if necessary), not updating them.
I recall @mbayley did a presentation at Insights a few years ago on automating the creation of a new company.
It is possible with DMT though.
I don’t think I have a full writeup on here. But here’s my presentation from 2024

I went the REST API route because there was some things (processes) you can’t do in DMT. It was also a lot faster.
There was a period of time where I was creating a company a day while we were testing the configuration. When we were ready to go live, I just pointed the tool at production and had everything ready in 5-10 minutes.
You can definitely get most of the way with DMT. It will take longer and there will be some things you have to set up manually. As a starting point, look at the 5 phases under the migration folder
