Source control options

TortoiseSVN is the Windows Explorer client for Subversion.

We're going to try Tortoise. It's a freeware type of version control
software (we really didn't want to pay for VSS licenses for those of us
who aren't really developers, but do some customization in Vantage.) It
looks like it will do everything our auditors need, if it works as
designed. (little vantage joke, there)

Visual Source Safe is what a lot of developers use. Nice thing is that
it
will keep every revision that is checked in.

Not sure what the cost is, but is well worth it.

I've used VSS as a developer for at least the last 10-12 years.

I keep track via a spreadsheet and attached a link to the spreadsheet to
the
Vantage menu. Definitely NOT ideal and everybody who's making changes
needs
to be diligent about keeping the spreadsheet updated.

If anybody has come up with a more automated way of tracking these, I'd
be
interested as well.

I use the Implementation Checklist under System Management/Company Maintenance. You can set up your list IDs by say group such as Sales Orders, Purchase Orders, etc and then under the detail tab tie those to specific menu items. You can add attachments, documents, add comments regarding customizations to the Help Screens, etc. Not exactly what it was meant for but actually works quite well

I think you can get the same feature set as VSS without the cost with Subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org/). There are plug-ins for Visual Studio, etc.

That said, I'm not sure how one would effectively use any version control system with Vantage without a lot of careful planning.

You would really want to define a standard project structure with subfolders for each of the typical components of a Vantage "solution":

\Project\
\BAQ
\BPM
\Customization
\Dashboard
\Report
\ServiceConnect

Then I guess you develop all of the pieces of your solution in your test environment, export them as needed, and save them in your project directory. Then you can version them.

But keeping your version control system in sync with what you actually have in production takes a lot of discipline. Its pretty easy to tweak and keep tweaking, and pretty soon what you have in your source repository is pretty meaningless.

I tend to export BPMs, Dashboards, etc. to a common directory structure when I implement something new, but I haven't gotten in the habit of using a source control system except to use Subversion to keep my Crystal Reports files versioned so I can undo an accidental change.
