Thanks to all for your input.......this helps!

I am about to take a course that will help me with writing queries in
SQL. My question to the group is that this course is taught using
Transact-SQL. Will that still be useful given that we don't use a SQL
server.

Thanks,

I don't know what Transact-SQL is, but if I were you, I would take
advantage of learning SQL via any method.

We are on a Progress database and we do not use ODBC for any Vantage
reports.

However, when I am troubleshooting a problematic BAQ, I find it very
useful to re-create the BAQ in another software by writing a SQL
query and use ODBC. It is a quick and easy troubleshooting tool for
me.

Transact SQL is the standard used by most DBMS.

Know transact is good to know for lots of different situations when dealing
with DBs. If you are on a progress system it doesn't do you nearly as much
as it would if you were on MSSQL. They hide a lot of the ability to run
transact up against the DB.

But using an odbc with transact is very good knowledge.

In this day and age knowing transact is a must just for about every IT
person IMO.

Dolores,

Transact SQL is a superset of SQL 92 and contains a set of additional
commands specific to SQL Server/Sybase. If the course is
predominantly centered on SQL theory and not the commands that are
specific to transact SQL then you will be well served. If, however,
the course is primarily about teaching commands specific to transact
SQL, then it will provide little, if any, value for your Progress
queries.

Michael

Progress uses transact it's just buried in there. It is hidden in behind all
the 4GL.
