SQL on Server Core 2019

,

Has anyone installed their SQL instance on Server Core? We are installing a new server and I am looking into this as a possibility. I plan to install SQL and the app server on 2 seperate VM’s on one physical box. To reduce resources used, I am considering the idea of running SQL on server core. Core does not support reporting services, so SSRS will need to be installed on the app server. Currently we are on Server 2012 R2 with everything one one machine, no VM’s.

My only thought is that I have appreciated having a separate desktop where I can run SSMS and a few other things. I’m pretty comfortable with CLI in any OS, but when I’m in our SQL server and can keep SSMS, N++ and a few draft project folders in one place, and can keep them all in one RDP session - that’s pretty handy.

What’s the potential advantage?

Also… My IT guy showed me how to hack any 2012 server awfully fast… we made it an urgent business case to upgrade last year. I suppose there may have been upgrades since but :grimacing: :grimacing:
