SQL Server licensing for MES workstations

Remember, Epicor is a Microsoft partner.  If Epicor is selling it one way it should cover you on the SQL side.  Whatever doubts you have question Epicor on it.

Yes....

Even if a worst case comes up, I'd think you'd only need to match the number of MES licenses, not all potential users.

One of our customers, wishing to migrate from Progress Epicor 9 to SQL
Server Epicor 10 is worried about SQL Server licensing for MES workstations.

Users, using a MES station do not identify themselves using Active
Directory, as they share an Active Directory account.
Therefore, Active Directory cannot be used to count MES users.

In case of a Microsoft audit, Microsoft could argue that every
_potential_ MES user would need a SQL Server CAL.
MES users identify themselves using an employee number.
This could lead to customers being required to license their total
workforce as defined by the number of employees, or to require an
expensive per-core license.

Is there some counter argument that could be used against such a claim?
Will that argument hold?

Thanks,
Pim
