SQL Upgrade to 2014

I'm always a little skiddish about system restore.

I had an XLConnect install that installed the free version of SQL next to my full blown version (something to do with requiring R2 I think).

I tried system restore and that did not work.  I tried uninstall and that did not work.  Eventually i had to resort to my server backup to get things running again.

So - once bitten twice shy - I guess.

We have a V10 server installed that is using SQL Server 2012.  We got a disk from Epicor for SQL 2014 and I was wondering if anyone has had a chance to do an upgrade?

I thought i remembered hearing someone say that if you are not careful the install disk will do a separate install instead of an upgrade.

Is that the proper procedure - install both and then uninstall the 2012?

Has anyone tried this - any advice?

Thanks,

I’d be careful upgrading.

Epicor has some specific “authorized” combinations for support.

Unless you are on Windows 2012 R2, that combination isn’t technically supported by Epicor.

I see little to no reason for upgrading at all. The differences between 2012 and 2014 are negligible at best in terms of Epicor. None of the new features will be supported and it is likely you'll be setting yourself up for a support black hole. What's the reason you wanna upgrade? If things are working fine with 2012... I say wait till 10.1/10.2 (which maybe supports 2014...... this is conjecture and probably wrong). Then I would install a NEW 2014 Sever and move the DB over.

Mr. Jose: Thank you for the reply

I think you are right - We should probably hold off for now.

Especially since the server is physical and not virtual.

The 2014 - disks came from Epicor so i'm not worried about the Epicor Support part.

Take Care,

DaveO

I am running SQL 2014 with Epicor 10.0.700.4 with no issues.

Got this version from Epicor when I asked for E10.

We are also running SQL 2014. No issues on E10 10.0.700.4, so I'd say upgrading won't really hurt you. SQL will recognize a DB from 2012 into 2014 without any problems. Its up to you as far as upgrading goes though. Set a restore point/create a backup and go for it if you ask me.
It may affect ODBC connections, but other then that, Epicor's schema and what not does not matter if its DB is on 2012 or 2014. Knowing Epicor they will probably make you upgrade if you ever ran into a problem and needed support Lol.
Mr. Aaron: Just wondering if you have done an upgrade from 2012 to 2014?

DaveO
Yes, we actually came from SQL 2008, so we made an even bigger jump. You'll be fine, like I said, just make backups/create restore points and give it a go. Be sure when upgrading you select the UPGRADE option otherwise it will install a new instance of 2014 and you'll have to manual bring over all your DB's which I think with E10 is like 10 or so now. Also there are quite a few differences between 2012 and 2014. We upgraded out box to 128GB of ram and 2012 only supports 64GB, so we had to move up. you can have 8 replicas in 2014 instead of 4, etc. There were a TON of performance enhancement done to 2014, so its a very worth while upgrade if you ask me, however, if you are satisfied with 2012 and its working, then its more a would you rather debate. Do what you think is best for your business.
Mr. Aaron: Thank you for the detailed reply.

That is exactly what i was looking for.  My concern is the SQL Upgrade process.

However, as you mentioned, I just need to be careful to do the upgrade.

The customer was offered 2014 (i think by epicor to help with performance) and he is saying as long as the server is new and not in production - why not upgrade it to 2014?

Unfortunately, this is a physical machine and the backup is lengthy process.

I will pass on your comments and we may just do the upgrade.

Thank you again,

DaveO

All that needs to be backed up are the SQL DB's, after that just set a restore point if you can and do the upgrade. if something bad happens, restore point back and you have DBs backed up also. That process should take no more then an hour.

Good luck, feel free to email me with questions or if you need to talk I am available :)
