We use sub-contract operations for parts which are manufactured by sub-contractors but for which we supply some or all materials. Currently, it is setup so we have warehouses and resource groups/resources for our suppliers who do the sub-contracted work. We have set minimum levels for the materials held in stock with those suppliers, and replenishment gets triggered through kanban replenishment. However, you have to manually raise a misc. shipment entry to ship the materials and then separately do an inventory transfer to move the materials.
I wondered whether a better solution would be to setup a seperate site called “Supplier” and within that have warehouses for each specific sub-contractor we use. Shipments between our main site and that of the sub-contractor would be transfer orders. We only have one site currently and whilst I have looked through the multi-plant university document, it’s a bit light on detail.
It represents a small part of our business activity so I’m looking for quite a simple but workable solution.
