SubContract for Molding Operation

Hello experts,

The process on how we produced a urethane discs(set up as a purchased part) are as follow:
1.) Purchasing Create a PO
2.) Purchasing emails shipping department to send the mold to the supplier
3.) Supplier produced the urethane discs using mold provided by us
4.) Supplier sends the discs with the mold back to us.

Now, we are considering subcontract operation to do this but not certain yet on proper steps to do it.

So far, testing is on progress and have the following
1.) Create a job with subcontract operation.
2.) add mold as a material to the job , it will then be pulled as inventory item(is this ok??)
3.) When mold comes back, do an inventory adjustment to reference mold had comeback.

Help is greatly appreciated.

I have recommended many time for fixtures to issue them from inventory.

  1. Setup the mold as a quantity bearing part standard costing
  2. set the cost to zero
  3. Assign a Product group with Mfg Variance to mold maintenance account
  4. Assign a part class for stock status reports
  5. Qty adjust in 1,000 eaches
  6. On your job enter in qty 1 per parent
  7. Issue N eaches to the job
  8. process subcontract.
  9. do not adjust back into inventory anything

What this accomplished

  1. defines what mold is required
  2. when you run the mold through N cycles, you want to refurbish it
  3. Create a job to refurbish the mold receive in N parts from the job into inventory
  4. The Mfg Variance will post to Mold Maintenance account

Any benefit to treating the mold as a resource and using the Maintenance Module for refurb?

Then you need to buy the maintenance module…
I like the maintenance module, but, there is overhead with anything you do.
You would get a log of all of the times you refurb the mold.

You don’t automatically get the number of cycles run, with a part, set your minimum on hand with a minimum mfg lot qty, MRP will create a job for you automatically when you fall below that minimum.
Part Advisor would show all of the production job you have done on the specific mold.
