Substitute Parts

Hi All,

Looking to see if anyone has a solution for PO suggestions and
substitue parts.

I have substitute parts that should count towards the min/max of
another part.

Ex:
Part A) 5 pcs on hand and 10 pcs min.
Part B) 5 pcs on hand and 10 pcs min.

Part B is a substitute of part A and vice versa.

I want purchase suggestions to ignore both parts because added
together they total 10 parts, which is the min.

Can this be done?

Thanks in advance,
Ben
I was wondering how other users deal with substitute parts. We are on Vantage 5.10.133 and use the MRP module. We have an opportunity to use either new or reground ceramic inserts in our machining centers and thought that listing the reground inserts as substitutes to the new inserts, which are called out on the BOM, would be the way to go. After talking to Epicor support I was informed that the substitute parts were for reference only and would not be taken into account as being on hand to take the place of the original parts that might be out of stock. In other words MRP will generate suggestions to purchase more new inserts while you have plenty of reground inserts that should be used in their place.

There is an enhancement request 8742MPS to have MRP consider substitute parts when looking at requirements, there are 3 hits on this enhancement at this time. Please call Epicor and add your company to the request if you use MRP, as it will allow better management of parts and their substitutes.

I would appreciate any input any other users may have in this regard.

Thanks!

Their has also been an old suggestion to add to timephase a check box to
include substitutes. This was originally brought to my attention by one of
the old timers Scott Johanns. I thought it was a excellent enhancement. That
one has been on the back burner for about 4 years now or more than likely
fell off the list. So good Luck, maybe they both will get looked at together
if we all make for a SUBSTITUTE PARTS enhancement initiative together.

Paul,
We've been wanting this functionality for years... which we call "use up"
capability. It was in our 1980's era MRP system, but we lost it when we
went to Vantage in 1999. It's still not there in 5.1. The wording in 5.2
makes it look like there is some kind of functionality for substitute parts.
Are you saying that MRP still does not take the "substitute" part into
consideration in Vantage 5.2 as well?

We are still under 5.0 but I know in version 5.2 in Part Maintenance you can
place a part on run-out status. In the what's new in 5.2 it states.
"Supply-side users will see a warning message when working with this part.
The user will have the option to use a substitute part, if one is
designated. Demand side users will see an error message and be prevented
from continuing with this part. During the get details process, the default
substitute part will be used automatically if the the quantity-on-hand for
the run out part is insufficient for the warehouse that allocations have
been made against. Run out parts are not included in MRP processing"
