[Tech] Half/Full Duplex

After going to ver 5, I had about 8 workstations (Win 95 & Win 98) which
took 2-3 min (after entering the user name and password) to get the main
Vantage menu. Turns out the problem was that since I changed servers
(both name and IP addresses), the workstations still had entries in the
registry pointing to the old server. When I removed those entries, ALL
workstations logged in very quickly! I don't understand why only 8 out
of 49 workstations were slow!?!

If Malcom changed the name or IP address of his server after the
rebuild, then that could be his problem. .

After rebuilding our Vantage server last weekend (after an OS
crash), I'm having issues with several workstations running very
slow. They can get into Vantage, but if I try and pull up, for
example, a job in job tracker, the workstations seems to hang.
Task Manager says that Progress is not responding. If I wait
several minutes, the screen will finally display.

Some time ago, there was a discussion on the issues involved with
the half/full duplex issue, and I seem to remember something about
this in that discussion. The server and the workstation in question,
are set to auto-detect both speed and duplex. They are both
connecting at 100 Mb/s and Full Duplex.

Vantage Support offered several 'Performance Tips', but none have
done the job. Any suggestions?

(Oh, and of *course*, this has to be the owner's workstation!)

If you're connecting at 100 m, then your problem is elsewhere I'm sure.

I had a few machines that would not connect in a reasonable time no matter what performance settings I tried, until I changed from Win 95 to Win 98 SE. That did the trick.

If it is not the network issues or client OS, as Rick suggested, another
thing I have seen affect performance is anti-virus software. Some try to
scan the whole database, depending on settings. If you rebuilt the server
did you change any anti-virus settings there or perhaps a bad setting at the
client? I have a homegrown WIP report that takes 2 minutes for me to run
but one user on identical hardware took 15 until I uninstalled Norton AV 5.0
and installed NAV Corporate Edition. Now his runs in 2 minutes too.

Malcolm,

What is your server AND client OS and SP level. I had an issue with a NTSP5
Server and an NT Client with SP6. If I logged into the workstation as an
Administrator performance was great. As soon as the user with less than
administrative privileges logged in the performance was seriously degraded.
Maybe check your SP levels on both server and client and be sure they are
the same. If not I know that upgrading the client to WIN2K resolves the
issue as well. I kind of caught this issue in the middle of the discussion,
maybe this has already been mentioned or maybe not related at all. Just
thought I should throw it out there.
