Technical

We jumped to Vantage from a custom Paradox -DOS program approx. 18 months
ago. At that time after weighing all the options we ended up moving to a
Windows version of Paradox and simply created reports with any of the past
information we needed to get at, then started completely fresh and
unattached with the Vantage system. At first we thought the transistion was
going to be a nightmare, but in the end it worked out fine... the process
and sales engineers were able reference Paradox and then re-key the same
info. to a new job in the Vantage system rather easily.

Hope this helps.

We currently have a custom database written in Paradox 5.0. It is very old
and falling apart. We would like to know what is the best way to create an
application that would work with Vantage.

Should we write this program in MS-Access/Visual Basic so that we can find
the developers or does anyone else have a suggestion as to what we should
write this program in.
We came from a combination of RealWorld and EZMRP to Vantage but the
transition was not easy.

First, you will need to purchase the "Custom Master Files Import/Export
utility" and the "BOM Copy/Import/Export utility" from custom programming if
you wish to import your current data into Vantage. The cost was $2,500 each
when we obtained ours (the price may have changed). There are other ways to
get the data into Vantage BUT you immediately loose a great deal of leverage
with tech support if a data discrepancy occurs with the imported data. (I
can't blame them there.)

You will find that these two utilities will support a portion of the total
Vantage tables but NOT the full package. As a result, you will need to
enter some of your data by hand, or possibly, keep your existing system up
"forever" to look at historical data.

The two import packages I mentioned accept CSV file input without a header
row. I used Microsoft Access as my intermediate and successfully moved all
of our Partnumbers, BOMs, Customers, Vendors, etc. into Vantage while
merging the data from two different "old" systems.

Please let me know if I can be of further help

Depends what you are trying to do. I think the best tool would be Progress
itself.

I with Michael. We had a custom Production / Labeling system that was
great. It was written using the Progress database.
