Scott,
We've installed terminal services and handhelds on the Vantage server in many locations. So long as your user numbers are not outrageous, it will work just fine.
The difference between the "out of the box" RDP sessions and the one that Epicor suggests (the actual correct way) is the one that comes with the server is ONLY used by administrators - called remote administration mode - and those users in that group. I doubt seriously that anyone would want to put a handheld user(s) in this group. The only way to actually get the handhelds working is to install Terminal Services in what is called "application services mode" and this requires terminal server CALs (separate from Windows CALs - you need those too...). You have to buy TS CALs, but Microsoft will allow you to evaluate for 120 days and then after that you will not be able to access the terminal server. They are cheap ~$80/user or so.
When you install it you receive that message about some programs may not work - and while you should use precaution in doing this, it will install and function just fine. After this, you will want to install new applications by first opening a command prompt and typing "change user /install" this will allow any programs being installed to be accessed by all users. When you're finished you can either reboot the system or type "change user /execute" - most of the time a reboot is recommended.
Hope this helps.
