Terminal service vs. Citrix

Joe
The licenses are concurrent. All you do is add the account names
into the RDP Group on the server. After that they can log in. The main
difference between Win2K and Win2k3 is Win2k3 picks up network printers
automatically, not just the printers connected physically to the
parallel and serial ports as in Win2k.

I run a single processor server (2 GHz) with 2 GB of RAM and Windows
2000 Server to avoid license fees with Windows 2000 Pro and XP Pro
clients, for about 10 concurrent users. It appears that we might have to
upgrade to Server 2003 to run Crystal Reports when we move to 8.0. You
mentioned your Terminal Server licenses are concurrent? I remember with
2000 and down level clients (Windows 98, etc.), the licenses were not
concurrent and they locked to each computer via the NETBIOS name of the
computer. When we changed the name of a computer, it would then take
another unused license until all licenses were used up! Then we would
have to call MS and read back and forth some numbers to reset the
licensing, a big mess. Just wanted to make sure your licenses were
concurrent, and what benefit over Windows 2000 Server Terminal Services
is there compare to 2003? I noticed you went from NT to 2003 so maybe
you don't know and maybe someone else knows?

I currently run two remote sites on WIn2k3 terminal services, 36
total users. I changed from Citrix to Terminal Services when I upgraded
to Win2k3. Win2k had many printing problems over TS. You can install
terminal services on any Win2k3 server though you should not put it on a
domain controller or the Vantage server, perferabbly by itself. Each
user uses about 40K in the server per session. Concurrent licenses are
$79.
We are on 6.x I run a Dell 1750 with 2GB ram and it is loafing. I'm
running it over point to point T1's(overkill). I'm also running our
phone system over the T1's.
In my past I have run remote locations over a DSL with as many as
50 users. It's mainly the memory on the server. You generally need to go
to dual processors on the server over 40 users.

We run Terminal Services from several locations including out of the country and it works well. There have been significant improvements from 2000 to 2003 TS so I definitely recommend runnig it from a 2003 server.

I do not have any experience with Citrix.

Hi Babette,

We have a similar set-up where we have our main location in
Massachusetts and a 'remote' site in Chicago. Back when we first began
using vantage (7 yrs ago...version 2.7) we used terminal server with
Citrix over a 1/4 T1. Now... we are on 5.2 and we use only the remote
access feature of windows over the same line and everything works just
as well as when we had the terminal server/citrix set-up. Although,
our bandwidth has become an issue as we've increased the # of users out
there and we will be upgrading to a full T1 laterr this month. Let me
know if you have any questions and I can get our network guy involved
if needed.

HTH,

I was replacing six servers as I changed my domain from NT 4 to Win2K3. I replaced the server and didn't have to buy an upgrade of Citrix to run on it. TS is included. All I needed was licenses.
The main advantage previously was in the printing area and a smaller footprint. Win2k3 solved the printing problems and the footprint doesn't really matter as ram is cheap when you are buying a new server. I just check my TS server. It has 26 connections right now with a GB free.
