Test environment

Thanks Jerry,

It was the loopback adapter that was needed, see previous posts.

Several thoughts -

1. If you have the regular live install already on the laptop,
make sure you install the local test version in different directories
(c:\epicorT, c:\epicorT\mfgwrk80T, etc) so all the files are separate.

2. When doing the install for the local test database, disconnect
the laptop from the network while you are installing the software so
you know you are not accidently using network shares in your install.

3. Make sure you also label all of your icons separately and that
they point to the local install and not the network.

I have found this successful in the past.

Trying to set up a standalone server installation on a laptop that can
operate outside our domain. When we disconnect it from the network, it
no longer works. Anyone have any experience in a set up such as this?

A while ago I setup a similar environment and experienced the same
behavior. It was long enough ago that I don't remember what I did to fix
it. But I do remember having problems running the stand-alone
environment and being connected to our network. Maybe a port sharing
issue of some kind... just grabbing straws here.

I would suspect your network controller, that it's DNS not being able to

Make sure you can connect to your network shares <\\servername\Epicor> for example - make sure the admin service is using a local account

Yes re the loopback...When I was an Epicor
Consultant Ben set my box up a couple of times
and I remember that being a key setting that I
occasionally had to turn off when operating on a client site.

Outside of the loopback, you can also try setting up a hosts file entry with
127.0.0.1 with your laptops name in it so that it will always look to itself.

This solution has worked in the past with varying success for me.

The Microsoft Loopback adapter is a testing tool for a virtual network
environment where network access is not available. Also, you must use the
Loopback adapter if there are conflicts with a network adapter or with a network
adapter driver. You can bind network clients, protocols, and other network
configuration items to the Loopback adapter, and you can install the network
adapter driver or network adapter later while retaining the network
configuration information. You can also install the Loopback adapter during the
unattended installation process.

You mean an Epicor file & DB server, right? Which version? Progress or
SQL?

Last time I did it was back at v6. But if you just want to operate it
from that one laptop and you're on Progress, you want to set up Progress
in "stand alone" mode. I don't remember how I did it and can't find
notes, but hey ... maybe it get you a little closer in the right direction.

I you really want a portable server, like for off-site training or
something, the installation is the same as you'd do on a "real" server.
But you'll probably need to refer to the server by IP address, or have
some other way to find it since you won't have local DNS going.
