Another variable....inflation risk. Been a long time since this has been a factor but it could be again. Witness steel lately. Carrying cost of inventory might be less than risk of higher price later.
Another technique could be negotiated prices for a given time frame (6 mo. - 1 year?) then stocking consignment inventory if the vendor will do this. Stocked on-site but owned by vendor until you pull it and "buy to a job" - zero lead time for delivery.

Subject: [Vantage] To stock or not to stock?
Does anyone have an equation or system to determine if parts should be stocked?
I imagine this would be set using three basic variables: cost, lead time, and turns. I can also envision stocking items that are bought in bulk, but used in quantity such as wire (buy a spool at 5,000 ft but use only 1,000 per machine).
We constantly go back and forth between buying to stock and only buying to the job. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.
