Tooling BOM / Dimensional Inventory / Drill Bits

Patrick,

We use dimensional inventory for tracking salvaged aluminum extrusions, and
actually track in half-foot increments for 24-foot extrusions (i.e. 48
length-buckets). Depending on how AR you are (oops! my psychologist is
showing), you could dimension the parts in percentages. One caveat: When you
create a dimension code, make sure you pad the code ID with leading zeros.
In our case, the default dimension code is 288; at 48 inches the dimension
code is 048. That way, all of your dimensions will sort incrementally by
length, since the dimension code is a string, not a number.

Subject: [Vantage] Tooling BOM / Dimensional Inventory / Drill Bits

We are looking into adding a tooling bom for secondary operations like
drilling. From what I have gathered from talking to that area, drill bits
get issued, used resharpened and put back into inventory. Some get so short
that they can be used on one job and not another depending on the depth
needed. For those of you using Dimensional Inventory can I use this to
inventory Drill bits. Example: 1/4 bit, full length, 1/4 bit at 3/4 of its
length, 1/2 of it's length, etc... A part might have to have a fill length
bit while other only need one at least half its length. I'm also trying to
figure out what is the best dimensional increment halves, quarters, tenths,
etc... Any help, ideas, comments would be appreciated.
