Touch screen Monitors

We also use ELO Touchscreens and have had great success with them...very durable, easy to install and use. We opted for the 15" for our data collection stations. If you are only using this for a time clock I think the 12" would be sufficient.

I like EloTouch http://www.elotouch.com/products/default.asp
They come designed for all types of applications. If you get the
intelitouch or securetouch, they work very well and are very durable.

We just bought some ELO touchscreen monitors through Dell. We are using them
for MES in V8 and they have been working well so far. To keep the screen
clean, we also ordered some peel-off protector overlays through
StrongEngineering.com.

Make sure you get resistive touch, otherwise they tend to not work as well
if the screen gets dirty.

Accessing the internet could be interesting though. Will they need to have a
keyboard to type in URLs or passwords?

Brian,
I will have to respectfully correct you in that resistive is a poor
technology when it comes to touch screens. It relies on an overlay.
Intelitouch screens use sound waves transmitted through the glass of the
monitor to communicate touch. They can get dirty/oily messy and still work
just fine. Also, they only work with a soft touch, so it discourages the
use of screwdrivers and other items that might damage the glass, but
encourages fingers (even gloved).
I speak from experience when I say intelitouch is the only way to go. We
had someone spill a cola down the front of one of them a while back. Most
of the screen worked just fine when it was discovered after the weekend, but
with a little Windex and a paper towel, everything was back to 100% in 5
minutes. Resolving the reason for the spill took much longer.
Either way, if you are considering touch screens I can't stress enough to
avoid resistive and capacitive and go with touching directly on the glass.
When it comes to flat screens, it also means the screen is made of glass and
eliminates the rainbow effect if you touch the screen of your laptop, not to
mention the elimination of "wear and tear".
Good luck to all,
Aaron

Here is what the ELO website has to say about their products:

http://elotouch.com/products/accutec/default.asp
AccuTouch technology is the workhorse of resistive touchscreens, providing unsurpassed performance in POS, industrial, medical, and transportation applications. Touch the screen with a finger, gloved hand, fingernail, or object such as a credit card, and you'll receive a fast, accurate response every time.

http://elotouch.com/products/inteltec/default.asp
IntelliTouch surface wave is the optical standard of touch. Its pure glass construction provides superior optical performance and makes it the most scratch-resistant technology available. It's nearly impossible to physically "wear out" this touchscreen. IntelliTouch is widely used in kiosk, gaming, and office automation applications and is available for both flat panel and CRT solutions.

Expanding on what Michael said, Intellitouch is surface wave technology and
although I can't say about Intellitouch per se, we have had very poor
experience with surface wave in general. We prefer resistive, which I
believe ELO calls Accutouch and have good experience with that because you
can be wearing gloves and still use it.

Brian
We also have been using Elo Touch Screens for over a year (Vantage 6.1) and they work very well. The only maintenance required is a brief cleaning each month due to the oils/coolant in the air.

The monitors and computers are not covered, this is why we give them a quick cleaning each month. They can hold up to some harsh environments. The monitors are heavy enough to stand on their own and as another member mentioned the soft touch required does not affect them. You can honestly poke them had with your finger and they will not move.

The 15" works very well with the data collection screen. We ended up using a panel pc model BPC-6171.

It works great, it's NEMA rated and fairly inexpensive for Panel PC's.
