TT5's

Hello Dick

We currently use the set-up recommended by epicor Gateway, TIM1B, and TT5's.
My biggest hurdle was the employee culture shock.

We've gone from paper-based, no checking, to a full-blown DC system. Some
employees threatened to quit if they had to use the system (in fact, one
did). Comments ranged from "Why should I", to "Big brother syndrome".

The dust has now settled and tidying up the DC Error Log a couple of times a
day is about it. The system in v4 seems pretty solid. After all the
histrionics of implementation, screaming, blood and teeth it's now me that's
shaky.

Dick:
We have been using TT5s exclusively in our shop since 1 September
last year, with only minor problems. Even in Vantage 3.0, with no error
trapping at all, our timekeeping support has gone from a half-time data
entry clerk to less than 10 minutes per day clearing up things that hang in
the error log.
They're easy to use if you take the time to set up as much of the
entry as possible for bar codes (in our case, the only thing people enter is
the production quantity; everything else is bar code). The system works
exceptionally well, even for our employees who have poor-to-nonexistent
English skills (we have a sizable Hmong workforce).
For us, it wasn't even close: 12 PCs and monitors (plus attendant
maintenance and support), plus 12 DC licenses versus 12 TT5s and one DC
license.
Here're the few caveats I'd throw out:

1. Use a fast computer for the data collection gateway. Ours is a Celeron
366, which handles 80 employees (Epicor says a 486-66 will work... DON'T
BELIEVE THEM!).
2. Customize the TT5 prompts to suit your "culture." I modified the prompts
to use terms familiar to our teams.
3. Train, train, train. We spent an hour in the classroom for each employee,
with hands-on training.
4. Do a periodic inspection of all components (I do this every Friday).
5. Coach folks who don't get it. Most learn quickly.

The systems have been very reliable in our metal-cutting
environment; I've had the ROM in one unit fail. Contact me off-list if you
have questions.

Two years ago, we attempted to implement TT5's in our manufacturing
environment. Because of a variety of
reasons, we aborted this attempt and instead went to mouse and keyboard.
I like the concept of the TT5's,

resolved? Particularly, has error trapping (at the input device) been

DITTO!!!!!

What Steve is true. We have exactly the same scenario. It's hard to build
confidence in a system that crashes whenever for no apparent reason (At
least noone has found yet) Thank goodness we were just testing with a small
group and had not made the full move. At this rate, I'm not sure it will
ever happen. There are many other bugs that Steve did not mention!! So be
careful.... For instance, our setup people enter setup % complete and it
duplicates that data in the setup % and qty completed fields, thus
overstating qty complete by whatever percent they completed on setup.
Numerous rounding errors. It basically makes more work adjusting and making
changes that it would be easier to just enter the entire labor transactions
manually. I'd WAIT to get in this mess at a later time...
