Up to here with printing

The acceptable solution has been found. You are exactly right Tim, if I
print preview it does not ask for the printer and uses the default. It then
does not care what type of port it is on and prints to the jetdirect card
just fine. I find this an acceptable answer to the problem. I have tried
several drivers with no luck, but the print preview works. I think the
purchasing manager can life with the extra 4 minutes this will
take...especially since he is about to order the processor, memory and hard
drive upgrade for the vantage server to bring it out of the dark ages. For
the week until he gets the speed he will be begging for, he will live with
it.
Thank you all for the responses you gave. The problem is now solved.
Thank you all so much.

Aaron,

This sounds like a problem that we had with report builder through
custom report links. When we ran the report and tried to print directly
to the printer, we got the same error. But, when we did a print preview,
the report would come up, and then could be printed from there. It seems
to me that it had something to do with a LaserJet 5p driver, but I can't
remember exactly. I moved that printer into an area not used by Vantage.
Good luck.

I have reached the end of my rope here. I can't get Report Builder Reports
to print to a networked printer. I have a HP laserjet 2100 with a HP
Jetdirect 610 internal print server. Every time I try to print a report to
it from either of the computers that I am trying to for now, it will allow
me to chose the printer, configure the printer but when I say print, I says
either the printer is not installed or the port is not available. I can
print anything else to it, but Report builder reports will not. Can someone
please help me here. I tried a similar question before with no response.
It was then shared off a peer NT computer, I thought it might work to
install the jetdirect but now it won't work on either. Has anyone ever seen
this before?
We are on Vantage 3 and are still missing a couple of patches there. The
two computers are NT with SP6 installed.
Thank you .... Please.

I could not get RB to work with Jet Direct. The only way I could get it to work is cable the printer to a workstation, and share it from there. If you're working with all NT workstations, this works well. Your workstation is "tricked" into thinking the printer is attached to LPT1 of the local machine. RB does not see this printer installed, but after the print job is sent Windows sends it to the right place.

Hope this helps,

Aaron,

What are you using for print drivers ?

Just for tricks, try forcing the print driver down to a HP4 driver on the PC
generating the report.

The fact that other applications on the same PC can print but Progress
Report Writer cannot would strongly suggest a print driver problem.

Well, I used the NT/2000 drivers that are a little newer. That solved the
problem on the computer sharing the printer from a direct connection
(parallel). The problem I have now is that I have removed all printers from
the one that I really want to print the report from and just installed the
one printer (shared off another NT computer's parallel). Now when I try to
print it does not list any printers installed at all. It is like report
builder will only print to a physically directly attached printer and even
the fooling it into thinking the printer is on the parallel that NT does is
not enough. It wants some kind of personal interaction with the printer. I
have no problem with 95 or 98 but NT will not see that printer for Report
Builder. This is just stupid...The printer is there, I can print to it from
Vantage and every other application and Report Builder says it is not even
there at all. Am I the only one that has found anything like this? I would
love to just tell the purchasing manager that he has to print it on another
computer that is running 95 or 98 or the one that is physically connected,
but he will not accept this. He feel the need to print his budget report
from his NT computer and to that printer. I think I have tried everything
in reason...any other suggestions? The printer is now installed on the
parallel of an NT computer and also connected to the jetdirect.
Thanks for the response so far.

Does your printer share name have any spaces in it, for instance "laserjet
2100"? We initially had this problem with 2.6 many years ago and F6 screen
prints, so I had to reshare the printers as "laserjet_2100" or
"laserjet2100" with no spaces. Also, I use TCP/IP printing on all Jet Direct
boxes, not DLC protocol.

Aaron,

I can vouch for the report builder printing to printers that are not
connected to any system at all for that is how we print everything. It is
all set up as a network printer with the printer having it's own IP address.
And have never had a problem with anything Vantage related. I would check
drivers above all else.

I am getting the latest PCL5e driver and trying that. I appreciate that you
have a similar set up and it does work. I can't believe this one does not.
I also have it set up TCP/IP with it's own address. I have a 3 port
jetdirect that works fine with Win98 computers and reports, but... I am
trying to change the network over to NT for security, but there are a few
bumps in the road to overcome. This one is more like a wall. Hopefully
this new drive will do the trick. I will be sure to let you all know if it
does.
Thanks again for the help.

Aaron,

I do not have your answer but I know it can be done - I use a Laserjet 2100 printer with Jetdirect also using NT but I am only on service pack 5 and I am able print report builder reports. The only problem I ever had is when I generate the report directly thru
report builder it wants to print to the manual tray instead of tray 1. If there is anything that I can tell about the configuration I will try to help but unfortunately, my computer knowledge is not as advanced as some.

Stupid question - as a cheater - couldnn't you put the printer on a computer as their local and share the printer? I know our IS guy would probally yell at me for that but....

The problem is also not limited to either NT (it also happens in the 2000

I haven't read all the threads so this might be duplicated. I also am not
familar with how your JetDIrect is configured. Do you have a server
controlling the printer or are you printing directly from the workstation.

If you haven't tried this it may be worth a shot. Map the TCP/IP port to a
physical port (LPT1). I confess I don't use report writer much but it may
be looking for a local phyiscal port and is unable to print directly to an
IP port.

Just a thought.

Here is an idea, try looking at the vantage.ini file and/or the .p file that is used to launch and run the report and see if there are some printer parameters in there. I know that printers can be defined in both of these files.

Let me know if you need more info.

What format are you spooling in, EMF or RAW? Try them both. I have to
print in RAW format to all my HP networked printers with the exception of a

Aaron:
Share the printer on a computer that has the jetdirect printer configured.
Then attach to that share on the box having difficulty. Then try printing
the report to that attached printer.

Good luck.

Aaron,

Perhaps this bridge has already been crossed, but have your tried
reinstalling the clients? We had a couple of computers awhile back that
seemed to have trouble printing report builder reports. We have all NT
workstations, and why one would print the reports and another wouldn't
seemed strange. When our account manager was here, she suggested that I
reinstall the client on the workstations that had trouble. I don't know
what it missed the first time through, but that seemed to do the trick.
We have had no further problems printing report builder reports from
those workstations.

Well, I used the NT/2000 drivers that are a little newer. That solved
the
problem on the computer sharing the printer from a direct connection
(parallel). The problem I have now is that I have removed all printers
from
the one that I really want to print the report from and just installed
the
one printer (shared off another NT computer's parallel). Now when I try
to
print it does not list any printers installed at all. It is like report
builder will only print to a physically directly attached printer and
even
the fooling it into thinking the printer is on the parallel that NT does
is
not enough. It wants some kind of personal interaction with the
printer. I
have no problem with 95 or 98 but NT will not see that printer for
Report
Builder. This is just stupid...The printer is there, I can print to it
from
Vantage and every other application and Report Builder says it is not
even
there at all. Am I the only one that has found anything like this? I
would
love to just tell the purchasing manager that he has to print it on
another
computer that is running 95 or 98 or the one that is physically
connected,
but he will not accept this. He feel the need to print his budget
report
from his NT computer and to that printer. I think I have tried
everything
in reason...any other suggestions? The printer is now installed on the
parallel of an NT computer and also connected to the jetdirect.
Thanks for the response so far.

Aaron,

What are you using for print drivers ?

Just for tricks, try forcing the print driver down to a HP4 driver on
the PC
generating the report.

The fact that other applications on the same PC can print but Progress
Report Writer cannot would strongly suggest a print driver problem.

I have reached the end of my rope here. I can't get Report Builder
Reports
to print to a networked printer. I have a HP laserjet 2100 with a HP
Jetdirect 610 internal print server. Every time I try to print a report
to
it from either of the computers that I am trying to for now, it will
allow
me to chose the printer, configure the printer but when I say print, I
says
either the printer is not installed or the port is not available. I can
print anything else to it, but Report builder reports will not. Can
someone
please help me here. I tried a similar question before with no
response.
It was then shared off a peer NT computer, I thought it might work to
install the jetdirect but now it won't work on either. Has anyone ever
seen
this before?
We are on Vantage 3 and are still missing a couple of patches there.
The
two computers are NT with SP6 installed.
Thank you .... Please.
