Upgrade 8.03.400

I am attempting to load 8.03.400 in my test environment. We are in a
SQL 2005/Windows 2003 Server environment, so I don't know much about
OpenEdge.

It appears that the Progress Explorer Tool is empty. Do you have to re-
build all of the database Objects in the Progress Explorer tool? Maybe
I did something wrong. If not, then the steps to rebuild all of the
database objects aren't in the instructions.

Does someone have any advice on this? I gave a shot at making one
database mirror the settings of the database in my live environment.
The file path to the Progress database is the same on both my live
server and my test server. The appservers start fine. When I try to
start the open edge database, I get the error:

"Error in startup of database localhost:20931:MfgPilot803. Message:
19:01:17 BROKER **This Process terminated with exit code 1. (8619)
(JUNMsg024)"

I am in process now. Will post any quirks.

One heads-up, it uses a new version of Openedge. So you can run 803.400
and previous versions on the same server. Unless you want to pay Epicor
to fix it for you, of course.
> Has anyone upgrade to 8.03.400 yet? If so any problems

Sorry I made a typo before, you *cannot* run previous versions on the
same server as 803.400 without modifying the ports used by Progress
explorer and the various databases and appservers.

Now that I am done the upgrade, the other bit of information to pass
along is the version that shipped is actually 803.403. So there is
currently no patch other than 803.403A. I found this wasn't clear.

Is there a noticeable increase in performance with this upgrade?

Yes. I am live on 8.03.403A and have been since August 18th. There is a
fairly significant increase in performance. My experience has been
positive and I personally feel that Epicor has done a pretty good job
getting this release 'right'.

Thanks for that yes I was unsure because on the download site there
only Pa803403AP.EXE as an execute file.

Kirsty
I have been informed that the 8.03.400 patch requires SQL server 2005 to be
installed even if you are only a progress data base. Can anyone confirm
this?

Nope...we are Progress and don't have SQL at all.

We didn't need it and it doesn't say that anywhere in the documentation
that I downloaded off the Epicor site.

That's good to know. Especially since the documentation for updating the help system says version 8.03.400 or higher is required first

I'm looking at the patch documentation now, and I find a few other things aren't clear.

It doesn't mention Progress versions/updates anywhere. I thought this new version uses 10.1B, but I don't see any database update documentation or requirements as part of the 8.03.403 upgrade. Is the Progress update included as part of the Vantage Pa803403AP.EXE upgrade?

It says to log into the Data Administration Workbench to have the data conversions run. Is that the Data Administration for OpenEdge? All of the data conversion routines I've run to date have been done through Vantage, usually using the Admin Tool.

My understanding was that this version uses .Net 3.0, but it's not listed as a requirement anywhere. Is it required?

Thanks,
Scott

Look at the "Determine Your Installation Path" flowchart on page 6 of
the Manufacturing Systems Installation Guide: Windows Progress Database,
Version 8.03.400 PDF.

First it's a Progress specific installation guide... second that it
contains a SQL upgrade decision tree is misleading. I read it as "If
SQL" it must be SQL 2005. Otherwise it's an implied ProgressOE. About
1/2 way down you'll see the server installation steps "Install Progress
OpenEdge 10.1B and the 10.1B SP2"

My $.02 ;)

Did you get the media shipped to you yet? You need the 400 disk before
anything else.

That would make a difference. I was led to believe 8.03.403 WAS the upgrade to 8.03.305. I just found the notification that .400 is available in my quarantine mailbox, dated yesterday. Interesting how the patches were available before notification of the .400 release went out. I'll have to contact Epicor today for the .400 media and documentation.

No even if you just going from 80.03.305i to 8.03.400 you need media
first. when i asked epicor they said no it was just a patch type
file.

The patch documentation doesn't cover it because it assumes you already
have 8.03.403 installed. The full install instructions were in the
"installation guide" section, but they aren't there any more. Not to
worry though, they do come on the 8.03.403 DVD.

Our company was in one of two beta groups for the 400 release. We
were part of the 8.03.305x to .40x path. There appeared to be a
significant increase in performance.

What type of server setup are you using? Quad's? Also, do you do any terminal services for MES or anything and how is that working if yes? We are starting to look at going down the SP400 path and I need to get some clarity on Hardware requirements and software set up challenges and opportunities. We are currently on 8.03.305H.
Thanks to anyone for any info or experiences with the SP400.
