Nope. running 6100 service because the DB is in the mfgsys61 folder...plus that's just the way
it happened when it installed.
I don't recall the conversion times but from 5.2 to 6.0 was the only significant time. 6.0 to
6.1 is really pretty quick (happens at first admin log-in). I think our 800MB DB converted
from 5.2 to 6.0 in a couple hours (on an older Xeon 550Mhz IBM Netfinity server).
The upgrade from 6.0 to 6.1 was really pretty quick and toughest part was changing the clients.
Julie Lehmann at Mercury Minnesota sent me some really great tips about 6.o to 6.1. I will
forward an archived copy of that email off-list. I also wrote up a recap of my conversion
experience from 6.0 to 6.1 and I will forward that as well.

Todd,
Thanks for the help.
Sounds like your also using the epic52 5200 services entry for running 6.1
is this correct.
What were you conversion times for:
Upgrading the database from 5.2 to 6.0
Logging in on 6.0 and running conversion utils.
Upgrading the database from 6.0 to 6.1.
Logging in to 6.1 for the first time.

If I recall the Progress Explorer entries were made for me. I don't
remember setting them up. I just had to tweak them for the same
optimizations I had made before. Especially one having to do with the
number of users. The default settings are way too low and Day One we had a
lot of people who could not log in due to memory limits. So copy all the
5.2 DB settings to the 6.1 DB.
For the clients I cheated (and got a little burned but in the end it worked
out OK). Basically I installed the first one (did not have to reinstall
Progress client) and saved the settings then on all the rest I just changed
the desktop shortcut to point to the new mfgsys61 folder. The burned part
was in having to manually create the epicor\mfgwrk61folder on the client.
Somewhere along the way I had half as mfgwrk61 and half as mfgwk61 (no "r"
). But the time savings in changing just the shortcut properties was more
than worth it compared to running the client install. Also, for some
reason, the client install would not remember most of the settings (like the
server IP address) which made running it really tedious.
Other responses here from the group made it seem to me that the RB issue
when changing a report is just something to be lived with since the DB
connection is saved in the report. I may just get all the reports changed
(one at a time as I encounter them) just in time to convert them to Crystal.

Todd,
Thanks a million, that's exactly what I was looking for.
Seems like a lot cleaner install this way.
I'm assuming you just make additional entries in progress explorer for
MFGSYS60 and MFGSYS61 databases?
What had to be done on the client install, did progress have to be installed
again?
My guess is there is a default ini setting, shortcut icon setting or
something to fix the Report Builder issue.

Subject: RE: [Vantage] Upgrade from 5.2 to 6.1
Basically this is exactly what I did. I left Progress in EPIC52 (drive
letter V: as it was) and installed Vantage (both 6.0 and later 6.1) in the
EPICOR folder shared as drive letter M: Inside EPICOR are now two folders
MFGSYS60 and MFGSYS61. I could probably now delete the mfgsys60 folder.
Each client now has the two mapped drives. I never touched the Progress
software other than to patch up to D08.
I dont exactly recall but there was something in the conversion process from
5.2 to 6.0 that prevented me from trying to leave it all in the EPIC52
folder. Seemed like added hassle to have two sets of folders (and mapped
drives) but in the end it has not been so bad.
One gotcha in the process is that every time I touch an RB report for
maintenance I have to re-set the DB connection. They run fine (inherit DB
from Vantage login) but the 1st time I make a change I have to re-point to
M:\mfgsys61\db\mfgsys. I am getting to the point where I can type that
really fast without thinking. I now force the connection dialog box to pop
up every time so I can check first rather than waiting for it to give me an
error and pop up.
Also, the client's local working directory gets a name change so all the
Crystal reports need to point to it for the .dbf files. I did 6.0 several
months before 6.1 so had to deal with this twice. But most upgrades require
this Crystal work anyway due to schema changes and new fields.

I sounds like many of you have gone this way. Tech support says don't bother
installing progress a second and third time on the server but their are no
step by step instructions for doing this?
First I have to upgrade my 5.2 progress from 9.1D06 to 9.1D08.
Can I put Version 6.0 and 6.1. under my EPIC52 share?
Should I put Version 6.0 and 6.1 under a different share?
What are the gotchya's for doing this?
Do I need two mapped drive letters for this type of install? One for
progress and one for Vantage.
Can anyone who when this route lay it out for me?
