Upgrade from 8.03.408 to 10

>>Data Upgrade Utility
>>step 4.19 Run Conversions....... hanging
Just a followup... no real error after all.
Only appeared to be hung due to the old slow test hardware being used.

I restored and then repeated the step 4.19 in the Data Upgrade Utility guide.
-- Took a full 3 days to finish processing but it's OK now.
----- I still couldn't find a way to see any activity on the system.

The one error I did receive doesn't appear to be critical:
- ICU source string error: 4
- at or around cv/cvsu0005.p, Update Translations, Loading original texts
I just clicked OK to proceed
--- I am guessing the error could be related to the Progress codepage being ISO8859-1?

Hi,

We are trying to upgrade from Vantage  8.03.408 to 10, but we must first go up to the "top" of version 9. We are having problems when converting the DB from 8.03.408 to 9.04.503B. We executed all the steps we know so far: expand the backup form 8 under the DB in 9, IDXCHECK, truncate bi, etc. Then we run the Schema Change, and the first phase starts and finish flawlessly. Then when the phase 2 starts, we get the "hour glass" cursor for a long time and it seems frozen, but it is not (files keep growing under DB folder). After that long period, another screen comes saying that is loading the definitions for version 9, but after a few seconds the process stops working. Did somebody experience something similar to this? Also, is (are) there a better way to do the migration?

We will appreciate your help!

Best regards,

That’s all pretty normal, the visual screens don’t tie well with the actual happenings behind the scenes.

Every upgrade I do, I open up the Task Manager and keep an eye on the Prowin32.exe that is there, that should be running on a regular basis, up to the percentage of a full processor, so if you have 4 procs then you will see it go up as high as 25%, if you have 8 then it will go as high as 12 or 13.

Is that stops and does nothing for any extended period of time, 15 minutes is my usual cutoff, but I also use the Process Explorer from SysInternals instead of the Windows one, because it is more granular and shows lower % of processor usage.

Yes. I understand that sometimes the process seems to be "hanged", but in our case it throws an error and it cancels. Period. Then, through the Prowin32.exe we can start the DB, but we can't start the App server: it says "starting" then "stopping" and lastly "There is no broker active or available". So, it seems that the conversion did not completed successfully.

Get a the data scrubber and see if that helps. I think they have one from 8 to 9.
Have you spoken to support?

No yet, but I will. Thanks for the suggestion on the data scrubber.
Isn't there something like the DUU (data upgrade utility) or something like that that Epicor has developed to automagically convert from E8 to E9.05?

The DUU is just a stripped down version of 9.04 to allow for the running of conversions as a step without needing to have a copy of OE 10.1C installed with a full copy of 9.04.

The DUU is sorta the "unreleased" 9.04.508 (from a data conversion standpoint anyway) and there are some conversions that are in the DUU that aren't in the 9.04.507a release (at least according to support) so we were told that we could only use the DUU and not upgrade from 8.03 to 9.04.507a to 9.05.70x.

I'm working on the same thing, and you first need to upgrade from version 8.03.408 to version 8.03.409C before you can upgrade into version 9.
Log into EpicWEB and download the document 8.03 Service Pack Installation Guide. It will walk you through the steps for upgrading to the 409C version.

Same problem here today at the same step you describe.
Please let me know if you find the cause.

FYI...
This is my 1st time testing the DUU .
I successfully tested an upgrade of the same database manually once
V8.03.409 thru the revisions to E9.05.7.xx
