Upgrade Server Win NT to Win 2000

You do not have to load NT4.0 first. The 2000 install will just have you
insert your 4.0 media into the cdrom at some point to prove you are legal
for an upgrade.

OK then, I have a new server on which I will install NT 4.0 first because I
purchased W2K upgrade for cost reasons. We had an old, unused, copy of NT
4.0 so upgrading it is a lot less expensive. I will be loading NT 4.0 on
the new server then upgrading form there. So no accumulated baggage and old
applicaitons. How clean would this scenario be? Another version - our
Vantage server running NT 4.0 and nothing else since the day Vantage was
loaded getting upgraded (for similar cost reasons). Does the media they
send for upgrades allow installation on a bare system? Perhaps with NT 4.0
CD available at some point in the install? Could I backup the database,
scratch and reload the server OS and Vantage 5.0 and convert from restored
database in order to get a "clean" system?

I was going to try to do all this at year-end but have found that converting
to Vantage 5.x and doing W2K at same time is requiring alot more planning
(and questions) than I had thought. It may get delayed into Spring. Thanks
for all the suggestions so far and any other tips that might come to mind.

Les,

I don't recommend "upgrades". I always do a brand-new, clean install. There is always the chance that an upgrade will not replace corrupted .dlls and other files that your current installation has a problem with.

I cannot offer advice specifically on a WinNT4-Win2000
upgrade, but as a general rule I agree that clean
installations are always better. It has been my
experience that upgrades should only be done when
there is a very good reason not to install clean.

Good luck,

Investigate if your hardware is Win2K compatable. Win2K is not as backward
compatable with old hardware as other operating systems has been. I have 4
NT4 Servers and since they are 2+ years old I will not be upgrading them.
As they are replaced I will move to a new operating system.

Especially if you have external devices - for example, I have an HP external
tape drive that won't work with Win2K-even though HP & MS have patches to
the software and OS for the drive, as soon as I put a tape in the drive, it
freezes the system. I won't go into the time I've spent w/tech support HP &
MS, still no joy.

Good luck.
