Upgrade to 5.0 - Report Builder Part 2

You may need to apply the two patches (found on the egroups list or from Epicor) called odbcuser.r and userfix.r to your TEST database. The path to the document is here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vantage/files/ODBC/_Vantage%20v5.1/Odbc51.zip

Thad
You helped me with this same problem last week. Report Builder works fine now that I found the "service" names for the different databases.

BUT, I CAN'T GET ODBC to work for Crystal Reports to anything but the Epic51 LIVE database. I have set up configurations for my test databases in Progress Explorer, using new Port numbers, and added the lines to the SERVICES file in the WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder. The path to database, names and service names follow the pattern used for the primary database. But the TEST connections fail because of a "string" error. I've removed and reinstalled using different names, different port numbers. Without success.

Any suggestions?

The term "Service" here is referring to the service name you specified when
you installed vantage. If you followed the installation manual verbatim, the
service name for a 5.0 database is EPIC50. For Vantager 4, it's EPICOR, and
for vantage 3, it's vntgserv.

The report builder file references this service name in the database
connections dialog, and it will point to your old database by default as
long as the old DB is on line.

There is a "Prompt Always" setting or something like it that will cause
Builder to prompt you for new connection parameters whenever a report is
opened.

Make sure to check the service as well. If you are using the service to
your current live database versus your converted database, more than likely
it is still looking at your live data.

OK, so I will wait. I still, however, would like to "fix" ONE so I know
what I am doing. The very first one I tried is a report that I put in the
Vantage menu via Custom Report Link. I get a message stating that the
field, "shipqty" no longer exists in the InvcDtl table, then it quits. I
opened Report Builder to see what I could do. My first job, of course was
to change the database connection to look at the new DB. Well, it LOOKS
like it is connecting to the new DB. If I click on Report/Database
Connections/Show Details, I see a path to the new DB. However, the
supposedly nonexistent shipqty field is there. I do an "insert" and find
it still in the list. I MUST be missing something here. It sure seems
like it is still looking at the 4.0 DB. Many of you have been through this
(modifying your 4.0 reports for 5.0).... I seek your wisdom.

Some field names from 4 to 5 have changed. The shipqty field could be
ourshipqty or sellingshipqty. You have to pick the correct field in report
builder reports in all areas, report fields, calculated fields or aggregate
fields. The same is true for jobshipqty and orderqty. Those quantity
fields now have our or selling in the field name.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
To make a long story short, I don't use ODBC.

I decided after somewhat sucessfully setting up ODBC in a test environment
that using progress exports was the way to go for my particular setup
(Visual Basic 6.0 / Crystal Developer migrating to Visual Studio .NET (which
has Crystal .NET included).

I call progress queries from visual basic applications, and export the
results to XML files which are loaded into RecordSets / DataSets and bound
at run time to List Views and/or crystal reports. Though I thought files on
disk would create a bottleneck, I've discovered performance just as good, or
better than with ODBC, especially with

Takes a bit of programming, but I've developed class modules and include
files that take care of most of the plumbing work, so now all I have to do
is write the progress query, and the user interface code. For each
department I create menu programs that have a list of applicable reports.
For instance, a list of vendors is displayed in a grid, under which is a
couple of date picker fields. Double clicking on a particular vendor
launches the vendor transaction report for that vendor and date range. A
user types in a part number, hits enter, and the latest BOM is printed. More
work for me, time saved for them.

Most of this could potentially be done with ODBC, but I prefer the 4GL
language over SQL for complex data queries. Also factored into my decision
were the potential security risks related to ODBC. I like only having to
deal with one connection to the database, that being the Progress client.

Though I've tried to modularize my code as to make it less of a when we
change database location and directory structure, It's not quite yet in a
form which one could easily adapt to their environment. If enough people
are interested in the code, however, I may consider posting a commented,
configurable version.

Thad
You helped me with this same problem last week. Report Builder works fine
now that I found the "service" names for the different databases.

BUT, I CAN'T GET ODBC to work for Crystal Reports to anything but the Epic51
LIVE database. I have set up configurations for my test databases in
Progress Explorer, using new Port numbers, and added the lines to the
SERVICES file in the WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC folder. The path to
database, names and service names follow the pattern used for the primary
database. But the TEST connections fail because of a "string" error. I've
removed and reinstalled using different names, different port numbers.
Without success.

Any suggestions?

The term "Service" here is referring to the service name you specified
when
you installed vantage. If you followed the installation manual verbatim,
the
service name for a 5.0 database is EPIC50. For Vantager 4, it's EPICOR,
and
for vantage 3, it's vntgserv.

If you are using the service to
your current live database versus your converted database, more than
likely
it is still looking at your live data.
