Upgrading to 6.1

I agree wholeheartedly with Todd on this action.

I really wish we had spent a little more time with the upgrade from 5.2
to 6.1. 6.1 was touted as the CRM release. What we failed to look at
was the impact on Engineering & Workflow. Since we did not have CRM, we
treated not too differently from a patch. Everything worked out ok,
luckily. We just needed to scramble a little on a Monday morning to get
Engineering functioning.

We would most definitely not have been so lucky if 8.0 / 8.03 was
treated the same.

Try these PDF files out. If you need more you can browse arond
ftp://ftpmpls.epicor.com/ <ftp://ftpmpls.epicor.com/> (login with your
EpicWeb login). Note Vantage 6.x is often burried under Mfg6 type
naming.

As for going to 8.x....this jump from 5.2 to 6.10 will be trivial
compared to that. Plan on spending maybe a year or so in that upgrde
process. Not just the mechanics but analyzing the changes and new
features and planning how to best implement them. A lof of decisions
have to be made before you start because you will be locked in to them
for a long time. Like a carpenter...measure twice, cut once...so..think
twice, do once. 90% of the trouble people have with 8.x is due to not
understanding it and rushing in....that and epicor's really poor upgrade
documentation that starts with ...Step 1...schedule an Epicor
consultant. For us D.I.Y. people that won't fly.

Paul:

This is not criticism - just my opinion: I think you should respect the
question that is being asked. Perhaps you could provide some reasons
why you think they should upgrade to 8.03 instead of 6.1. Have you
considered that not everyone has the time or resources to upgrade to
machines capable of running Vantage 8? In the meantime, 6.1 is a nice
step from 5.2 and it will make their conversion to 8 (if they choose to
do so) easier. In addition, I believe both 6.1 and 5.2 use Progress
9.1D. Less to install / upgrade.

Dolores:

I would upgrade to the latest Vantage 6.1 patch unless someone tells you
about a specific problem that affects you. We are on 6.1 patch 535 (not
the latest). This was the latest when we went to 6.1. Everything we
use Vantage for works fine - there was no reason for us to install
additional patches.

We are currently on Vantage 5.2 and within the next few months, we will
be upgrading to 6.1. I would appreciate any suggestions on things I
should be aware of or preparations I should make for before and after
the upgrade. I am currently trying to develop a checking list for the
event and any suggestions would be great.

Dolores,

I upgraded from 5.1 to 6.1 and the major change was dealing with ECO
part changes for my users which is part of 5.2.

I would do the following:

1. I believe 5.2 runs with progress 91D. If not, install 91d and
mfgsys61 in a shared epicor folder. Transfer/update reports for 6.1.
2. Install in a laptop 5.2, 6.0, and 6.1 (take it home over the weekend
to update). Restore back up from 5.2 to the laptop. Update to 6.0 and
6.1. Restore 6.1 back up into server. You are now in 6.1. The reason
that it is better to do the updates in a fast laptop is that will do
updates, schema changes, etc in a single user environment making it a
lot faster (a lot!!)

Since you have 5.2, you could install 6.1 in desktops, etc. and see how
both work together. You could ask users to do some work in the new
environment testing reports, etc. Once all users are familiar with the
screens and all reports are corrected, you can upgrade over a weekend.
The reason you want to do this gradually is the amount of work involved
with the upgrade and you do not want all users calling you at the same
time saying they cannot work in the new environment.

Good luck!

Lakin General Corporation, Inc.

- Watch Engineering Groups.

- Test the workflow functionality. You will need to have some
basic setup in order for Engineering to work.

- RFQ Management changed to Supplier Relationship Management.
The buyer workbench could prove very beneficial here.

- This was supposed to be the CRM release so there is a lot of
focus there which took away from these other "improved areas"

This is a quick overview of major gotchas.

I think the latest patch release for 6.1 is OK. We are a couple behind but they are now infrequent enough that they ought to be pretty stable. The upgrade from 5.2 to 6.0 will be where mos tof the work is. 6.0 to 6.1 is pretty minor. I think that was once refered to as the CRM release. If you have not prepped your users for the small user interface differences from 5.2 to 6.0 I would suggest trying the upgrade process out on a test server and showing it to people. Nothing as bad as going to 5.2 from 4.0 (with Engineering Workbench, etc...). Trying the ugprade out also allows you to benchmark the schema and DB changes and post conversion processes.

I have a couple checklist spreadsheets I'll send off-list that night have some steps to consider that may not be covered by the documentation. BTW...if the documentation still refers to Vista just substitute Vantage. ;)

You cannot get to 8.03 without first going to 6.1. That could be done as
one "project" i.e. starting with a 5.2 database, upgrade to 6.0 then 6.1
then 8.03 all in one weekend, without ever going live on 6.0 or 6.1. But
Vantage will not let you skip a release. The db needs to be converted for
each release.

Good advice! I'm in my second year of testing, patching testing and
patching. Started with 8.0 in May or 2005 and tried every patch as well as
the 8.03 release and still not ready for prime time. And a note on the
Epicor Consultants: I find that to be very brassy on the part of Epicor to
charge their clients just to continue using the software. In our case we've
been on Vantage since 1998 and have paid hefty support contracts every year
since. It seems like they've taken the "take it or leave it" attitude for
existing customers, while expanding their customer base by distributing the
great new state of the art .net technology software.

Sorry. Hit on-list post right above an off-list reply. Was not meant for group at large.

Try these PDF files out. If you need more you can browse arond ftp://ftpmpls. <ftp://ftpmpls.epicor.com/> epicor.com/ (login with your EpicWeb login). Note Vantage 6.x is often burried under Mfg6 type naming.

As for going to 8.x....this jump from 5.2 to 6.10 will be trivial compared to that. Plan on spending maybe a year or so in that upgrde process. Not just the mechanics but analyzing the changes and new features and planning how to best implement them. A lof of decisions have to be made before you start because you will be locked in to them for a long time. Like a carpenter...measure twice, cut once...so..think twice, do once. 90% of the trouble people have with 8.x is due to not understanding it and rushing in....that and epicor's really poor upgrade documentation that starts with ...Step 1...schedule an Epicor consultant. For us D.I.Y. people that won't fly.

I really do appreciate all your input. That is what I love about this
group....very responsive. I am new to Vantage and Progress, therefore,
I am extremely glad that we are taking baby steps in upgrading to 8.03
and we will be doing that in the not too distant future. This upgrading
is allowing me to learn a lot for our jump to 8.03. Again, thanks to
everyone.

DON'T DO IT. What aren't you going to go up to 8.03?

Hello All,

We are currently on 5.2 and will be going to 6.1 in a couple of weeks
and I wanted to ask you all what would be the latest safe patch we
should apply for 6.1. Thanks in advance for your help.
