UPS brands

Just upgraded an APC system with a Liebert 3KVA unit.

I really like the monitoring system. The unit can be equipped with a hot
swappable NIC that hosts it's own web page (yes the web page is in/on the
NIC card - no software loading required to monitor the UPS).

You just need the IP address which is DHCP capable and a web browser. You
do need to load S/W for the auto shutdown, but since the UPS is network
aware you don't need serial cables and you can control as many servers as
you want.

There is also an optional power by pass system that lets you physically
remove the UPS for repairs without disrupting power to the servers.

The only negative was how long it took to delivery the product, but this is
Canada and there are lots of mountain ranges between Toronto and Vancouver!

Also the APC software did not uninstall gracefully and I had to hack it out
of the registry (not a good situation). With that experience, I uninstalled
the Liebert S/W to test it for problems, it performed a clean uninstall and
reinstalled without any problems.

Hello,

I have a question for the group regarding UPSs...

I have a Compaq ProLiant server that I need a UPS for, basically the
question is, should I go for a Compaq UPS or another manufacturer, e.g.
Belkin.

Is there any advantage in having a Compaq UPS just because I have a Compaq
server?
And what does the group think about Belkin UPSs?

Thanks for your input,

Anton,
I've always used APC brand UPS and they have been very reliable. The larger
units that work with servers offer software and connectivity to sense power
outages and begin an orderly shutdown when necessary. I haven't had any
experience with Belkin.

Anton,
I agree with Warren, the APC units with the PowerChute software are very
good. I have 6 of them in various sizes. The only issue I have had with
our Compaq Proliant email server is when rebooting itdoes not "report" to
the APC unit quick enough, due to the service not starting quickly so the
APC box goes into alarm and "off-line" mode. This is not the fault of the
APC unit but rather something I did on the Compaq. The workaround is to
power off the APC unit and start it from scratch prior to powering on the
Compaq server. I really like the poewr glitch reporting from the APC
software so I can monitor our power company's performance.

I have also used Tripplite but without the software it was only for network
switches. I don't think there is any particular reason to use the Compaq
UPS if they are more expensive or don't have software to gracefully shutdown
the server when the batteries are low. Belkin I have not used.

We have an APC UPS on each of our 40 or so computers. They've been pretty
reliable, though we've had some so long that they've had to be replaced.

Because we live in the snow country, we average a good 3 to 5 power outages
a year, and that's not taking into account the california rolling blackouts.

The UPS's give us enough time to power up the generators.

We have the rackmount models for our servers.
