User Fields version 8

So what happens when I put a user field in a blank location X. Then Epicor
updates the screen and puts a button or something in the same spot? You need
to look at all screen customization after you apply a patch incase something
doesn't fit or now overlaps? Is this how it works?

In Vantage 8.0 there is a technology being utilized called Layered
customization which basically means that your customizations will stay

(when customizing a screen you save it as your own

We have been testing version 8 of Vantage and recently found out that the user fields (Part File Maintenance) no longer exist. I was wondering if anyone else currently uses these fields that has gone to or is testing version 8 and what solution they have come up with.

Dave,

Check to see if the labels have been defined for the user fields, perhaps this is why they aren't appearing. I can't imagine that the developers would totally omit these fields due to the potential impact on older Vantage users that may use these fields. Before the "VB Form" days there were heavily utilized if you needed to input user specific information.

The user fields, like part.userchar1, exist but they're not supported in the standard forms... you have to customize the forms to reference them. More custom fields have been added to many tables. There's a new one called ShortChar## (50x) to handle relatively short fields.

So what happens when Epicor changes a screen that you have added user fields
too?
Does your older screen get loaded instead of the new one?
How do you know what version your custom screen is?
How do you know a newer version is available?

You can export the customizations then import them after the release. We do this all the time since we're refreshing our v8 database from our live 6.x almost every release. I suspect standard forms won't be changed drastically. If they are, the customizations may have to be redone. So far, we haven't had to do that and we've been using v8 since the beta program started.

By the way, the JobAsmbl corruption issues we've encountered have all been resolved as of Patch 8.0.807a except one: copied assemblies get BomSequence value of 0. And Doug Williams of Epicor Development says Index BomSeq, which uses the BomSequence field, isn't used in any updating program. It exists for programs to display the job structure without needing a recursive routine.

We have an open issue where the PO Line grid customizations/layout can't be saved properly. We hate the PO line grid as a separate tab is used for each type (job, subcontracting, inventory and other). Then columns are moved around depending on the type. Whoever did this didn't think of cut/paste from Excel as the columns don't line up. So we align them ourselves. We rarely use multiple releases.
