Using ARCserveIT to back up Vantage

Gary
We use ArcserveIT to back up our server. We use Progress' Backup utility to
create a backup file that goes on the tape. We used the Directory tree to
delselect those files and yes new files are skipped. Of course you can not
use the tree to deselect and put up with all the error messages. Since the
Directory is stable except for upgrades if you do the selection after each
upgrade you should catch all the files. We seem to.

Hi all,

I'm new to this IT professional thing so please bare with me!! We are using Vantage 4.0 and are using ARCserveIT Workgroup Edition 6.61 to back up our windows NT server which has the Vantage database on it. At one time we were going to use the addon on agent for open files to back up the vantage database but then epicor suggested using there backup utility in vantage. so, we have switched to using this utility and epicor stated that we should exclude the database from the ARCserve daily backup. My main question is this.....Computer Associates, the makers of ARCserveIT, stated in one of there documents that if you use the directory tree to select or deselect the files that you want backed up, only the files which are on the server at the time the backup job was created will be backed up in the future. They stated that they use a "snapshot" of the hard drive at the time the job was created and use that same snapshot for all scheduled backups that use that backup job and the backup job does not look for new files that may have been added to the directory in which files were deselected. Is this true? If so, how can you automatically update the "snapshot"? I was told that you could use the filter option and not deselect individual files but that would take much too long to configure for all the files that we do want excluded. Any ideas or suggestions? Should we possibly go ahead and use the backup agent for open files and not deselect anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks for helping a newbie!!

Gary,

You are okay excluding the Vantage\DB directory no matter what. All the info
you need is taken care of with Vantage's backup utility.

I'm not new to IT, but I am new to ARCserveIT. I have been using it for the
past 3 months, and I don't really care for it compared to BackupExec.
Anyway, someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Vantage
backup simply makes a copy of the data that doesn't remain open, thereby
allowing ARCserveIT to back it up clean. The stuff that is open in Vantage
can remain in the backup job, and it will get skipped because it is open. I
am doing a full-backup of the server that contains the Vantage files.

Yes it will usually state that the file is in use and skip it. BackupExec
does the same thing.

I use ARCserve Manager (the original from Chyenne Software) and it will
backup all the files on my server, open or not, except for several DHCP
related files. I don't recall installing the open file routine; maybe the
version I am running doesn't need it. Anyway, I check my logs everyday and
test the backup tapes for integrety weekly (I do a sample restore to a
folder setup for that purpose). Have had zero problems with tapes and drive
since install July 1998 - now I have probably jinked myself; oh well.
