We have also been questioning MRPs effective use of Part planning & messaging behavior control data.
My 1st quick impression was that MRP was simply not using some of the data properly (or at all).
2nd looks however, leave me less convinced of that. So many Vantage planning apps (Buyers WB, Planners WB, Time phase, etc.,) and reports (Planning Analysis, etc.,) also add their own 'on the fly' messaging to pure MRP messages that I won't be convinced of the 'cuplrit(s)' until I thoroughly test each.
That will require using our test db and creating specific conditions that should trigger specific behavior. Each sub test will have to be done in each app and report after running net change then a full regen (in case some behavior requires full regen to work properly).
I suspect we will find the cause of observed 'misbehaviors' will be some combination of specific MRP flaws, application and report logic flaws, and likely some misapplication of some planning control fields on our part because of less than clear documentation and consultant advice.
My own observation so far is that, even if everything (eventually) works as advertised, it will still be a relatively (compared to similar price tier products) weak to average MRP process. I'd give it a 4 out of 10 at best.
At this point, 4 out of 10 looks good as my expectations have been repeatedly beaten down daily for 1-1/2 years now... Example: I give their gloabl scheduling capabilities a 2 out of 10 at best... Probably the worst I've ever encountered.
Please share if you definitively determine specific bugs exist in MRP or the presentation apps (and I will do the same). They are more likely to get corrected faster if we piggy back upon each other's bug case reports to Epicor.
