Another company who is trying to convert from Vantage 6.1 to 8.0 has
been quoted by Epicor that there are companies out there that have done
this conversion and are up and running live. Has any company out there
had full success and if so, who did the conversion? We have
successfully done the conversion (after about 15 attempts and of course
Epicor updating the procedure) and now I am about to convert from 8.0
to 8.3.

We went from 6.1 to 8.03 and did the conversion ourselves. We had to
convert to 8.0 then to Unicode then convert to 8.03. We also use
Customer Connect so we had to do the same process with that. It was a
little over 2 days for us and that could be due to the db size.

We are converting from 3.00 to 8.03 right now and it's been pretty painless
except for our database being corrupted. It's taken them quite a while to
get the database corrected so we can move on. At this point, we are only
doing training. Our testing will begin when the updated database comes
back.

We also converted ourselves from 6.1 to 8.00 and then onto 8.03.

We went from 6.1 to 8.0 at the beginning of the year, but wanted to
start with a fresh database to get rid of years of junk. So we did a
full reimplementation and loaded everything using combination of C&P
from the old db where available and manual data entry where it was not.
Our database is fairly small though, <500 parts. Other than the step
backward in usability with version 8 and a few bugs, it's gone fairly
well.

We are still in the test phase, converting to 6.1 to 8.0. The issues
we currently do not like is that in 6.1 where things took 2 clicks now
take 7 to 8 clicks in 8.0. I thought 8.0 was supposed to be quicker,
and easier to navigate. We are upgrading our systems to support 8.0
just in the beginning processes of this stage. Going to see how this
new version saves us time/money.

As with most things, there are some pros and cons to Ver 8 over previous
versions. Off the top of my head...

Pros:

1.
Much improved reporting capability (dashboards, BAQ, Crystal XI)
and I hope this continues.
2.
Much better customization options (custom fields integrated into
the main UI, .NET options, etc).
3.
Consistency. Most the screens look, feel, navigate the same.
4.
Enhanced right-click menus to pull up maintenance setup screens
in context.
5.
Application support seems to be better.

Cons:

1.
All the screens are blank when you first pull them up. You need
to search for everything AND hit refresh for updates. Basically the
system gives you nothing, you have to go get what you want.
2.
Searching is onerous, too many clicks to get what you want
(although this is supposed to be somewhat improved for 8.03). Open a
new screen, hit search, no idea what you're looking for so you hit
search again to show the list, select item(s), press okay.
3.
Hardware intensive (this one has been fairly well discussed).
4.
Technical support has been slow to come up with solutions and we
have several issues in "development".

Overall, I think the newer version has more potential and has been worth
the effort/expense.

Not sure if this was 8.03, but some screens (like the Trackers) do have an
option for Auto Retrieve Transaction so all tabs will come up with data, but
this is a two-edged sword since you will wait to retrieve data that you may
not need.

Mark W.
That's also what I thought at first, too! My head hurt for the first few
weeks on 8.0, basically because I had to rewire how I did everything. (I
had been using "Vantage" in all of its glorious forms for about 10 years
when we implemented 8.0) It is like using a completely new system--not an
upgrade! It requires a completely different thought process to access and
input information. If you are "thinking" 6.1, 8.0 will be slow to use (I'm
not talking about software peformance issues).

We implemented 8.0 about 2 years ago, but we still have one facility on 6.1
so I have to use it occassionally. 6.1 is really frustrating for me to use
now! It seems like the dark ages...

Some of my favorite 8.0 features...

8.0 gives you the ability to rearrange the tabs on your screen. So in
quoting, for example, I have the tree view torn off the tab area and
positioned on the lower left hand side of the screen. This allows me to
easily go between operations/materials on the left and the detail entry
screen on the right with only one click. This also goes for Engineering
workbench, jobs, etc.

Also, right click on anything and you can directly access tons of stuff.
For example, right click on a job number in time phase, then left click on
the job entry option, and job entry will launch with that job information
pulled up (if you have job entry priveledges). Once again a lot quicker
access than 6.1.

Then there's all the custom fields we've been able to use to run our
business how we need to without a lot of the work-arounds we used to have
to do! (We were able to add our work instruction numbers to each operation
on the job traveler. So we can list the set-up work instructions and the
operation work instructions right where they need to see them...big step
for us!)

I also love that I can copy and paste selections from searches into Excel
(little things make me happy!)

To me, 6.1 is all about the "double-click dive". Part tracker may be
faster, but to me it pretty much ended there. Everything else is double
click, then double click again, then double click to select this...etc.
Down a screen, then down another screen...The interface is deep. 8.0 is a
much flatter interface once the record is pulled up.

Anyway, this is all just my opinion...I'm on 8.0 and I don't want to go
back!

Summary: XA Enh Named search option to direct cursor to starting at
box
Book: Change Requests
Request no.: 244ESC

Description / Steps to reproduce:

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
Would like to be able on the search screen to default the cursor into
the starting at box when using a Named Search as the default search.

SUGGESTED ENHANCEMENT:
Rather than having to click in the Starting At box when a named search
has been defined as the default would like the ability to set a search
option to direct the cursor to the start at box.

Another little irritating search idiosyncrasy in 8.0 is the sorting.
You click on a column header to resort in descending order and it
resorts the list but stays on the same record which is now at the
bottom. ARRGG

Wouldn't it be great if they at least defaulted the cursor into the
Starting At field of the searches so you could immediately start typing
your criteria rather than having to click the field then type?

All you guys are talking from the IT point of view,
you are experts on IT, but what happens at the user
side?
Are they happy?
Are they using all the functionality of 8.0?
What purchasing say?
What production say?

I'm on 6.1 and I'm not sure yet to go to 8.0 due to
comments here on the group.

We are going through the training for this right now and ready to do a mock
job entry from start to close. People aren't used to views and are
complaining but that's something they will get over. Most don't mind after
they've done some training and realized it' not too hard. as an IT guy, i'm
lucky in the fact that I'm coming in fresh to the upgrade, so i'm only
learning 8.03. Learning it fresh is a breeze.

Hello,

We're on 8.03.304C and we find that sometimes Vantage will not shutdown.
Neither File -> Exit not clicking X will shutdown Vantage.

We are forced to use task manager to kill MfgSys.exe.

Anyone else experience this?

I have experienced this with 8.00.xxx

I never nailed down the reason except that when Vantage will not close
System Monitor is no longer running before attempting to close Vantage. Why
that died I have not figured out yet.

Yes, this happens to us too...also, Vantage will freeze up when
closing forms. I have been working with support but of course they
don't know what is wrong.
