Vantage 4.0 on NT4 running alongside Windows Server 2003

My understanding is that SBS will only support one PDC, and that any
other server would need to be demoted. At the Minneapolis 8.0 road show
I asked Epicor why SBS was not recommended. Nobody knew I am still
awaiting an answer. I suspect they have bigger issues to focus on with
8.0.

Jonathan -

If you're changing domain names. Leave the NT4 as is.
Let SBS be the pdc of the new domain. You can run to
two domains with two pdc's - one for each. If you'll
be running DCHP on the new SBS server, just reserve an
IP address for your Vantage NT4 box.

We are running Vantage 3 (on NT4) and Vantage 8 (on 2k3),
each is its own pdc, with two domains. Runs fine.

Calvin

Thanks for your quick reply.

The reason we are splitting the servers is that firstly, Epicor don't
recommend running Vantage on SBS. Secondly, if anything needs doing
to the vantage server, ie a reboot or patch install, nobody can
access their files or email if the server goes offline.

Currently, the nt4 server is set up as a domain controller although
none of the XP machines authenticate to it and sit on a workgroup of
the same name as the domain.

We recently changed the name of the company and will also be changing
the domain name on the new setup.

There's a lot of impending change, so I want to make sure I'm
prepared for all eventualities!

We are intending upgrading our single server (P3 450MHz 256MB RAM) to
newer models running SBS2003 on one and Windows 2003 basic on another.
The Windows 2003 one will eventually run Vantage 6.x or 8, but in the
mean time, will we be able to connect our old server to the network so
that everyone can still use Vantage 4?
Cheers,

Jonathan
Jonathan, the short answer is no......assuming that your NT4 is a domain
controller. SBS will not co-exist with another DC and from my research
you cannot demote a DC to a member server.....you would have to
re-install. I do have a question. Why do you feel you need a second
server to run Vantage? What will you have on your SBS box?

Matt
