Vantage 4.812 performance

Thanks for your input,
I did the unregocx on the workstations. I had to because I was
getting that dreaded "splitter"
error. I think Todd Anderson hit the nail on the head when he said this
version of Vantage requires
more horsepower at the client end. All I can say is those users who
squeak the loudest
will get the oil. Most of the workstations are 95 or 98 operations
systems with 32 M RAM.
Actually, the workstations in the building where the server is located
are quite responsive. (they
are on 10/100 switches). In this building we are linked via microwave
(supposed 10Mbit transfer speed).
I wonder about throughput. It takes twice as long to do anything.
Thanks again.
Dick,

1) regarding IPL times - try using the black and white splash screens ( Can
be found on the Vantage download file list ). They helped allot -
especially on slower machines and remote locations. There are 2 of them -
search your Vantage directory for the files of the same names and replace
them.

2) the client PC's need to be at least P-200's with at least 96 meg of RAM.
The new release really pounds on the clients. Our P-600's with 128 meg of
RAM at 100 MHz run very nicely. The other 70 P-133's with 32-64 meg of RAM
are very annoying ... You did figure on buying new client PC's as part of
this upgrade ? Didn't you ?

Buying a Cray mainframe would probably also help ... but ...

Fellow Epicorians,

we've just migrated to V4.812. Everything is running OK, but
response's have gone
south. Our sever (Compaq 3000, dual 550's, 1G RAM) was adequate in V3.
I just received
a complaint in a user running the Time Phased Material Report. It took
5 minutes in V3,
and 15 minutes in V4. Initial program load also takes longer.

My question is, is there anything that can be done to improve
response times.
Creating the schema file does little to imrpove performance.
TIA.
Dick,

Part of your problem could be in the registery of each client machine.
Did you change drive letter mappings when you migrated?
Did the server and/or share name change?
Did you have a "test" server up and running with a different name and drive letter map?
We have found that vantage/progress makes a lot of OCX and DLL entries in the registery. Try using the UNREGOCX.bat file to remove these perveyors of slowness. If you look in your registry, (search for \DLC\ which is no longer used or for other server or share names that are different) you may find several entries that point to paths that no longer exist. If you have a spare unit sitting around, try formatting and re-installing the OS and install the vantage client on this unit. If you find it responds much quicker, I think you may find the registry entries are to blame. When we converted to 4.0 several months back, we encountered the same problem. Also there will be reg entries that refrence drive letters and others that would refrence the UNC path name.

Good luck.
David
